An old saying goes – ‘power flows from barrel’. Power comes in many forms. Tangible forms like being in good physical state with robust build. Examples are the boxers, fighters (judo, kung-fu etc.). The power manifests itself in the form of physical strength. These people might participate in the fight-shows or use their power to help others by lifting heavy things etc or by troubling/ scaring others by the show of their muscle power. This is the most common and simplest explanation of power and its manifestation. Definitely, it is not a favorable manifestation of power. It’s best advisable to observe restraint in the use of such power.
There is another form of power that emanates from the position of influence that one occupies in the society. For example, the President is more powerful than any other citizen by virtue of his/ her position. The decisions and rules framed manifest the power. On the negative front an example of Hitler would demonstrate the most detestable manifestation of power. As a German General, Hitler had ordered persecution and execution of Jews in his promotion of Nazism across the world. This form of manifestation of power leading to extermination of a particular race is not acceptable to anybody. Again, the most impressive manifestation could have been restraint in use of such power and using such authority for the progress of the state by promoting fraternity as explained the next section.
Intangible form of power is also a well-known phenomenon. Another saying goes – ‘Pen is mightier than a sword’. This power is in the form of writing, eloquence or in one’s personality. Power might ooze from one’s charisma. For example, the trade unions- demagogues influence workers and stir the feelings; leading to strikes in the organizations etc. This again implies that restraint in use of such a power would impress the people most.
Restraint cultivates humility and greatness in a powerful person. For example, Hitler’s eloquence had a magical power. He could have pursued restraint in exercising such power. Instead of evoking hatred against Jews, he could have used his power to promote cooperation and roused emotions in terms of encouraging people to work for faster progress.
