The National Football League is the juggernaut of all American sports, there is nothing that competes with it and honestly there’s nothing that comes anywhere close to matching it’s popularity. (bleacherreport) The League is the pinnacle of the football world, yes college football is important and it gets plenty of attention as a result, but at the same time it’s still a distant secondary option to the NFL and everyone accepts that fact. (foxsports) As important as the sport is, there is a bit of an overload of players coming out of colleges each year attempting to make it to the NFL, some of those that miss out are truly talented players, they just happen to be a bit on the “green” side and could use a bit more seasoning. (bleacherreport) There have been quite a few instances where a kid either goes late in the draft or doesn’t get selected at all, somehow he gets a shot with a team and develops into a Hall of Fame player, names like Tom Brady and John Randle jump to the front of mind immediately. (sportsillustrated) With situations like this you can’t help but wonder exactly how many potentially great players are going by the wayside as a result of not getting that one break.
The biggest issue facing the National Football League is that they really don’t have any type of developmental league, some would say that the Arena Football League and the Canadian Football League serve that purpose but the problem with that is that each league is different than the NFL on many levels. (wikipedia) There are plenty of “minor league” football choices in the United States but none of them are really a road back to the NFL, they’re more akin to independent wrestling promotions, when someone can’t hack it in the WWE or TNA they go to the indie scene and toil their craft with very little chance they’ll ever ascend to the heights previously attained. (wikipedia) There have been leagues formed that were planned as a somewhat development league for the NFL, but none has been able to succeed to this point, now it appears there’s one more option on the horizon with the possible debut of the Fall Xperimental Football League. (fxfl) As a fan of the the American brand of football, I’m hoping this works out, but I’m not willing to put money on it just yet, so many have come and gone that it’s really hard to get your hopes up, let’s hope this time is different.
