As I start to play golf more seriously, I’ve taken a look at all my equipment and started a total bag overhaul. As part of the process, I wanted to make sure I’m using the best equipment from head to toe. FootJoy’s StaSoft golf gloves have been PGA tour tested and are used by many players. I’ve started using a StaSoft glove and have really been impressed with the results.
My golf game
I’m an average player who is happy to break 100. I had been using two gloves for a while and then discovered they were baseball gloves, not golf gloves. I tried playing without a glove for a bit and got some blisters, especially after hitting the range. I’ve been hitting and playing with the new glove for a few weeks now and love it. The leather is amazingly thin and really allows me to have a good feel for the club. I’ve also gone with the traditional one-glove style, on my left hand.
Hitting with the StaSoft glove
The glove gives me good grip and protects my palm, while still offering a natural and transparent feel on the grip. The small size fits my hand perfectly and the craftsmanship is exceptional. There are small slices between the fingers for good movement and a slice across the knuckles covered with what FootJoy calls PowerNet mesh. This enhances both airflow and flexibility. The cuff holds the glove in place and the ComforTab Velcro closure gives a snug but not tight fit. The leather is treated to offer all-weather performance for good grip during wet or hot weather.
Cabretta leather tanned by PIttards
I learned a lot of fascinating information about both the leather used to make golf gloves and the tanning process it goes through. The best leather is very thin, yet durable and comfortable. It’s called Cabretta leather and it actually comes from special sheep grown mainly in Africa. They grow fine hair instead of wool and their hide is perfect for delicate items like gloves. The leather for StaSoft gloves is tanned by Pittards, a British firm in business since 1826 and known for making pilot’s gloves during WW II.
