The weather has officially broken. The sun has made her first appearance in Pittsburgh for the first time this year, basically.
As you open the windows and finally step outside without 16 layers to protect you from the wind chill, what is the first thing you want to do?
You want to fire up that grill and crack open a beer, of course!
While you’re deciding where to pick up your steaks from I’ll give you a jump start on your beer choices; my top five favorite spring beers and where to get ’em from.
Name: Spruce Ale
Style: Tavern Spruce Ale
Scoop up this uniquely flavored dark beer at Full Pint Brewing. A little gem tucked in about 12 miles outside of town in North Versailles. According to their website, the distinctive flavor comes from replacing traditional flavor hops with molasses and spruce tips.
Name: East End Witte
Style: Belgian White Wheat Beer
Citrus and coriander will greet your taste buds as the spring fresh air greets your anxious nostrils. You can pick up a growler at either location of the East End Brewing Company.
Name: Cool River Kolsch
Light and crisp, a Kolsch had to make my list. Deciding which one was the problem. You can get this bottled at Penn Brewery and be confidant it’ll please the crowd around your grill.
Name: Hop JuJu
Style: Imperial IPA
Winning the 2013 gold medal in its style category, this seasonal beer brewed with a “reckless use of hops” shines a golden hue at Fatheads on the Southside. Did I forget to mention the 100 IBUs?? Welcome Spring!
Name: Ginga Wheat
Style: American Wheat Beer
Refreshing ginger and lemon round out my last spring favorite. It screams sunshine and relaxation according to Roundabout Brewerys website… and my taste buds…
While compiling this list I couldn’t really bear the thought of dark or heavy. Winter seems to last forever here in Pittsburgh so I was looking for invigorating and enlivening. It’s time at last to shed the layers of down and wool, dig out the sunglasses from our glove boxes, roll our windows down and enjoy our city. Spring has sprung and so have the fun crisp beers!
