COMMENTARY | The joke going around about Piers Morgan losing his prime time spot on CNN is that all two of his viewers are going to be disappointed. That is not entirely true. Conservative bloggers are going to lose a source of material to be outraged about.
Morgan’s and by extension CNN’s problem is that Americans do not like being lectured to by their media betters. It is even more galling when that lecture is delivered in a British accent. It brings to mind why thousands of American colonials took their muskets down from the wall, kissed their wives and children goodbye, and marched off to blow the heads off of redcoats.
That, by the way, was something Morgan could never understand. Why are Americans so keen to keep their fire arms? One can imagine that George III sounded a lot like Morgan when talking about Americans and their insistence on breaking the King’s peace. Morgan forgot that the first battle of the American Revolution was fought at Lexington Concord over a British attempt to grab private firearms.
Of course it didn’t help that Morgan was on opposite the fiery and beauteous Megan Kelly, whose programming is filled with the latest government outrages. The difference is that Morgan would not have thought them to be outrageous. What is so wrong with Obamacare? The Brits have had government run health care for decades.
Now the question arises, what does CNN do with the hour long slot that has not become open. It should be some kind of interview/commentary show that will appeal to a wide spectrum of the cable viewing audience. It should be hosted by someone with broad appeal, whom American TV viewers would like to see in their living rooms five nights a week.
I know. There is this guy named Jay Leno who seems to have some time on his hands and might be enticed back onto TV, given sufficient inducements and promises. CNN could do a lot worse.
