Pick up your feet and walk. I was sitting in the emergency room of the local hospital, enclosed behind curtains with my wife, and all I heard was “scrape, scrape, shuffle, shuffle, scrape” of the hospital employees passing by the cubicle. No one knows how to walk without scraping or shuffling their feet. Weren’t they taught, as a child, to pick up their feet and walk like the Homo Erectus. These people lived 1.9 million years ago (The Pleistocene period) to about 143,000 years ago. Now we are reverting backward starting with scraping the feet.
I noticed this phenomenon occurring years ago and it is becoming more prevalent as the years pass. I see many women wearing heavy shoes, like military boots, and they just can’t keep their feet high enough. Yet, somehow they are thinking this is cute. Personally, I don’t. Then there is the cuteness showing untied regular shoes and boots. To keep the items on their feet, the feet must stay on or close to the ground. There’s a scrape, scrape and/or shuffle, shuffle because of the untied shoes. I’ve seen some people without strings in their shoes. I guess I am old fashioned but I will stay this way.
The military would not stand for this type of movement, on or off duty. The military teach a person to walk and march straight, feet lifted off the ground and head erect. Tracking or hunting someone or something in the bush your feet must be lifted off the ground, not dragged and making noise. I guess the people I heard never saw the military or did anything in the woods.
Could this be because younger people today like watching horror movies? I could assume not walking erect comes from Zombie movies. I could be wrong but until I see strong evidence showing otherwise I believe this is part of the problem, not all, just part. It is so sad how people of today pick fads that are a downturn to everyday living. Another bad fad is the sagging pants. Although it does not have a direct influence on dragging the feet but it does have a small effect. As the person waddles because the pants are almost around his knees, it makes the person take small steps and scrape their feet. The sagging pants fad originates from the prison system. Prisoners were not allowed belts and, most of the time; the pants would fall below the waist. The guards loved this because the prisoners could not run fast.
The shoe manufacturers and the shoe stores love these people who love shuffling and scraping. The more shoe scraping and scuffling, the more they mess-up the shoe. The more shoes that are messed-up, more shoes are bought. It’s a vicious circle and the shoe wearer is the loser. I may be wrong but I don’t think pre-historic man walked around shuffling his feet because he had more reason to pick up his feet.
Pre-historic man didn’t want to leave a trail, cause a dust cloud, make noises or take shorter steps. These people were about survival and they could not survive by constantly scraping their feet. Therefore I say, “People….pick up your feet”.
