Casual Flash game Papa’s Donuteria opens with an intro almost as silly as the one in Multishop Tycoon . You’re a skater kid hoping to use your employee privileges to get a line-jumping pass on a rollercoaster. Tragedy strikes when the coaster needs repairs, before you can even get one ride, and now you’re stuck cooking and decorating donuts.
It’s worth noting that you can play as a boy or a girl, and the goals are exactly the same. Hmm, it’s almost like it’s not all that hard to add playable female characters to games!
I thought this would be a time-management game, similar to DQ Tycoon, Youda Survivor, or Cake Mania. I expected donut-prepping stations, and a long line of customers. Instead, one customer at a time arrives, with a long and complicated list of desired donuts, which need to be made and delivered before the next customer can give an order. Fortunately, they tip well for their custom orders.
Each time, the donut-maker needs to choose the correct dough and cut out donut shapes, then fry the dough evenly, before glazing, icing and decorating your donuts. I was surprised by how many options I started with. I’d expected a few rounds of choosing plain or glazed donuts, before making a chocolate dough, no hole, raspberry-filled, glazed, sprinkled with blue stripes. Everything was much more Cooking Mama that I’d anticipated, with both the satisfaction of stylish, perfectly plated, Instagram-ready food, and the amusement of cooking disaster. (Except for the frying part… I will never understand why watching a timer tick down is considered fun. I’ve been conditioned to check to see if there was an Inst-fryer as an in-app purchase, but no. Frying and waiting wasn’t a plea for IAP — the game is 100% free — just a mechanic not best suited for impatient players.)
