Pancakes are easy to make and tasty, but a boatload of syrup on top makes them very unhealthy. Real maple syrup is slightly better than pancake syrup, but it is still very sweet. If you’re looking for a healthier pancake topping or just something different than syrup, try one of these topper options.
One of my personal favorites is to smear nut butter on a hot pancake. The heat makes the nut butter melt slightly. You skip the overly sweet flavor of syrup in favor of a healthier option that adds healthy fats and protein to the meal. If you want a little sweetness to the pancake, drizzle a little honey on top of the nut butter. It makes a tasty combination.
Fruit is another healthy pancake topping. You can put fresh fruit right on top of the pancake for the healthiest option. If you want more of a syrupy texture, cook the fresh fruit for a few minutes with a bit of sugar or sweetener. This breaks it down and makes it into a fruit syrup. You can also use jam as a topping. Look for a jam that is low in sugar if you want to improve the health value of the pancakes.
Yogurt is a naturally creamy topping option for pancakes. It spreads easily so you can cover the entire pancake. Start with plain yogurt and add chopped fruit or healthy sweeteners. Or you can use flavored yogurt. Just watch the sugar content. Many flavored yogurts are high in sugar. Sour cream is an option if you want a savory pancake. Or use ricotta cheese on your pancakes.
Instead of just sticking to one topping, why not add combinations of toppings? Start with your base topping. Then add one of these options for additional flavor or texture:
- chopped nuts
- dried fruit
- chocolate chips
If you want a savory pancake, try one of these additional toppers:
- green onions
- bacon bits
