I just wanted to make a quick painting job of my living room so it would look nice with the budget I was working with at the time. I bought some nice cream colored wall paint to use on the wallpaper in the room.
I started to paint over the wall paper and almost immediately the wall paper started to peel down the wall. It was a nightmare as I rolled the paint on the wall the paper would peel off and stick to my paint roller the floor and me. I felt like crying and I think I did.
I quit trying to paint the papered wall and put all my tools away. Then I started to pick at the wall paper that was still stuck on the wall. I found it ripped off of the wall easy. Then I discovered huge cracks and holes in the wall under the wall paper. I took wall patch and patched the holes the best I could.
Once the holes were patched and dried I started to paint the walls again. I had done a lot of unnecessary work to get these walls to look nice. When I was done painting I had cream colored walls that showed many cracks and bumps. It looked very tacky but I was so tired of trying to get the room to look nice. I decided to hang pictures to cover the really bad spots.
I have run into walls that have paper on them and I have painted over them but first I check to see if the paper is on the wall tight. If I can’t easily peel the paper off the wall it can be painted and the paper will stay stuck on the wall even though it is wet with paint. If the wall paper comes off easily then I probably need to peel all the paper off the wall before painting.
I don’t recommend that anyone paint over wall paper but it can be a quick fix to make walls look nicer. I have needed to do it in a pinch for what ever reason but it is best to peel all of the paper off of walls before you paint. It is a lot of work but it is worth it in the end.
I found that painting wall paper is not recommended even if you are in a hurry to get the job done. Take your time and get the job done right.
