Those who purchase vehicles through a bank loan, often breath a sigh of relief when that debt is paid in full. If you thought that owning a free and clear title to your auto means you will not be in a position to have it taken from you, then you are sadly mistaken.
Jesus said that we should look out for the least of these, but laws in place, at least in the state of Virginia, seem to be against those who are struggling. If you own your your vehicle, but it fails to pass inspection, or you do not have the funds to renew the tags before they expire, local city government can have your auto tagged.
This means that if you have your work hours cut, get laid off or fired, or have a medical emergency, and you desire a few weeks to get your automobile in proper running condition, you may be out of luck. These laws do not allow for unforeseen emergencies.
You do not in the state of Virginia have the right to keep an auto you own, on your own property, if it does not have a current inspection sticker, or tags. I understand the city desiring to remove blight, and keep people from stock piling broken vehicles. There are however, hard working citizens who have fallen on hard times, and can do no better.
If your credit score is low, or you cannot afford a payment, upkeep or insurance on another car, it makes since to keep the one you already own. These laws take way your right to move in your own timing. If you live in certain apartment complexes things are more complicated.
A relative of mine paid cash for a car, but there was a delay in receiving the title. The apartment complex he lived in had a towing company to police the grounds at night. As soon as the 30 day tags expired, the tow company stuck a note on the vehicle saying it would be towed in 24 hours. The relative explained the situation and the apartment complex gave him 1 week to obtain the title and tags.
In Virginia, if you do not have a valid inspection sticker or tags, the city will put a bright orange sticker on the windshield stating that unless you have your car, truck, SUV or van inspected, and or renew the tags, they can tow your vehicle in 10 days. I recall years ago, a young man I know received such a notice. The city towed his car 4 days later, and had to return it because they did not allow the full 10 days.
Please be aware of the laws in your state, and the rules of any apartment complex you may live it. In this situation what you don’t know can hurt you. Those who have funds to keep everything in tip top shape never have to encounter these uncomfortable situations. But woe to the least of these, the very ones the Savior said we should look out for.
