Indiana is well-known for the Indy 500, but there are also a number of other reasons to visit the state. Take a look at some of the overlooked cities in Indiana.
Fairmount, Indiana is known for actor James Dean and Garfield creator Jim Davis. James Dean was known for movies such as: Giant, Rebel Without A Cause, and East of Eden. Every year in September, Fairmount has a festival known as Museum Days, and the James Dean Run, a car show honoring James Dean. The town has movie showings, fair rides, vendors of food and crafts, and even a James Dean look-alike contest. What a lot of people don’t know, is that Fairmount has great antique shops and cafes in the area. The Fairmount Historical Museum is also a great place to visit to learn about the town’s history. Many of the James Dean attractions can be visited if visiting outside of the festival dates.
Matthews, Indiana is a town located in Grant County. Matthews is one of the towns that is still home to a covered bridge. Each year in September, the town has a festival with the bridge as the centerpiece. According to www.townofmatthews.com, the festival includes crafts, food, and steam and gasoline engines.
Muncie is well-known for Ball State University. Muncie has several museums, such as the Minnetrista Cultural Museum and Muncie Children’s Museum. Another attraction for racing enthusiasts is the Muncie Dragway. Each weekend during the season, cars come from several miles to show off their talent. Muncie is also home to the AMA National Model Aviation Museums & Flying Site, where model aircraft displays can be viewed.
Newport, Indiana, is home to the Newport Antique Auto Hill Climb. Each October, the town hosts the Hill Climb. Antique cars drag race up the famous hill to claim bragging rights. The festival also includes a car show, arts and craft vendors, food, flea market, dog show, and queen pageant.
Located in Miami County is Peru, Indiana. Peru is known as the Circus Capitol of the World. Peru is home to The International Circus Hall of Fame and Circus City Festival Museum.
