Having a husband over 40, I am constantly redirecting him into a healthier lifestyle. Men often fail to realize that the mid-life crisis period is an awakening of healthcare needs. Here are the things that I worry about with my husband. I address them regularly in hopes that one day he will take stock and improve his health.
Depression and Stress– The more stress that he places upon himself the more likely he is to suffer continued bouts of depression. Know and understanding the need for counseling does not make you a failure, it makes you a warrior in determining your mental health needs.
Suicide– Men who ignore the signs of stress and depression are more likely to commit suicide. They may feel that it is the only way to combat the feelings of not fulfilling material needs. Look at your health and improve one thing at a time. Do not take on too much too soon. You can eliminate the thoughts and feelings that may cause you to take such drastic measures.
Prostate Cancer/Cancer– Men over forty need to see a physician to have a physical and routine blood work that will help to identify the needs to improve different facets of their health. Cancer caught early increased the chance to beat the odds. Don’t be left out on saving your life and bringing your family more quality years. Make sure that you have your PSA levels checked every five years.
Reduce Injuries– Follow common safety rules. One of the leading causes of death is the result of intentional injuries. Understand and be aware of the body’s limits decreasing with age. Don’t play superhero. Ask for help and accept the help that is offered. You are no good to your family if you are laid up because of stubbornness.
Diabetes– Men over forty are likely to face the dreaded restriction of diabetes. Failing to follow a proper diet in your earlier year’s results in a buildup and intolerance to the sugars found in everyday and commonly eaten foods. Watch your sugar intake and cut out excess sugars whenever you can.
Weight Gain/Weight Loss– Be aware of any drastic and unprovoked changes in your weight. be sure to talk to your doctor right away if you experience this issue. There is typically an underlying medical issue that is the root cause of this sudden change in body makeup.
Healthy Heart– a healthy heart doesn’t come just from loving someone. Be aware of the sudden signs of a stroke. Educate yourself on what to look for in heart related medical issues. Exercise regularly, reduce salt and fat from your diet little by little. Don’t fret over mistakes and set backs.
There is no cure all for extending a healthy life. However, there are measures that you can take to reduce the occurrence of diseases and limitations placed upon your from choices made early in life.
