The tournament is over; now, we look to next year, and that starts with who is going to actually be playing next year. In recent years, there have been many one-and-done athletes at large programs (Kentucky specifically). I disagree with this completely and believe that if you play at college, you can’t just do one year and figure you can play in the NBA and just drop all the people on your college team. People supporting the one-and-done rule use Lebron as an example that you can be ready to play; my problem is not if they can play in the NBA but what having these great players in college does. College sports are dying and everyone can see it, and this one-and-done rule is a huge reason why. At the beginning of the season, I was skeptical about how Jabari Parker would do his freshman year, and he came out and did amazing. This was one of the worst overall Duke teams in the last few years, and without Jabari, it would have been a tough year for them. So I was shown that Jabari can do it, and I like him as a player, but as a person still remained in question to me because that hinges on if he stays or goes. With Duke losing in the first round of the tournament, I felt that he knows he has to stay. Duke is not a team that loses in the first round, and Jabari knows he can lead them to a championship and should.
News Reports came out a few days ago stating that Jabari has applied for student housing at Duke, showing he most likely is staying to play another year. Basketball players are not like football; basketball players aren’t beaten up as much and have longer playing years than football, so Jabari does not need to rush to the draft as soon as he can. Jabari and players like him said that they would play for the university that they signed at, and they should honor that commitment and use every inch of their eligibility for the team. Leaving immediately I think shows disrespect for the coach (you really going to dishonor coach K?), the program that they play for, and that your just selfish and don’t care about the team.
If the reports are true and Jabari stays at Duke for even just another year I think it shows what a good person he is, and should be an example for other athletes that you play for the team, not for yourself. Jabari Parker give it one more year and give Duke another great year, one that they can actually be proud of at the end.
