We see people in need around us almost everyday. The begger on the side of the road or a homeless person pushing their only possessions aournd in a grocery cart. There is only a percentage of people who may stop and acknowledge a need of such unfortunate souls. When we think about others, we don’t think that many of the rich and famous can be touched by any act of kindness. It is just an assumption that they could care less and they are self absorbed with themselves. Fortunately, this thought is not necessarily true. Recent events will show you what I mean.
Several weeks ago, the news reported one day a woman visiting New York had come out of a restaurant. As most of us, she had some leftovers to enjoy later on. As she came out of the restauraunt, she noticed something that caused compassion to well up inside of her. She noticed a man digging in a nearby dumpster. She had no way to know any information about this man except that he seemed to be in need of something nutritious to eat.
Like most, she could have kept walking, ignoring the fact that the man was in need. She could have made excuses of why she didn’t want to stop and attend to his needs. But she acted out of kindness and offered the man her leftover meal. Atleast it was something to give him the energy to sustain him for one more day.
Little did she know that this demonstration of generosity would change her life. Unaware to her, she had touched the life of someone that day with her act of kindness. It happens that the man she thought was a homeless man looking for anything to saustain himself was actually the actor Richard Gere. He was filming a scene for an upcoming movie and cameras continued to roll as she entered the scene to perform her good deed. Gere was so touched by her kindness and compassion that he felt the need to do something in return for her reaching out to a stranger in need. He in turn called the local newspaper to report this story of a woman who stopped and attended to the needs of someone else. He wanted her to be recognized as a hero to those less fortunate and be an example of what humanity is capable of.
In turn I think it is noble of Gere to respond to this woman’s act the way he did. For one, he could have been irritated that she was interrupting his scene being filmed. He also could have shrugged it off and said it was no big deal. But he didn’t. He decided to go the extra step and reward the woman’s kindness with another act of kindness. He put someone else in the spotlight and recognized them for their deeds. This shows us that the rich and famous are capable to care. They are able to respond to others with compassion and are able to lift up someone else above themselves. We see that one good deed reciprocated another kind act from someone you might not have expected to respond at all.
