Zelena is running the town of Story Brooke crazy. Nobody knows who she is, or more importantly what her plan is; that is until this episode. In typical over the top Once Upon A Time we get a lot of information all at once about what specifically has been going on the last year. Once Upon A Time is one of those great shows that you always think you know what’s going on, and then they throw a right hook at you instead of a left jab and you’re left stunned, motionless, and unlike getting punched you’re completely happy with the result.
This part of season three hasn’t completely lived up to the hype of involving the Wicked Witch of the West, still it has promise to live up to the first part of this season spent in Neverland. What’s been lacking in this show is any clear direction in its first two seasons. But, it’s been able to reinvent itself, restack the deck and almost completely reinvigorate the cast all by doing away with one curse and then instituting another.
Still this episode gave us a lot of information to be excited about and what most of the information could mean for the next episode.
Did Rumpelstiltskin Ever Die?
Rumpelstiltskin did sacrifice himself for the good of his son, and everyone that he cared about. It was a perfect end to his chapter on the show and sealed his story shut, or so you would think. In this episode we find out that Belle and Baelfire come together to find a way to bring the Dark One back to life.
This is where they meet famous Beauty and the Beast character Lumiere who in a ruse blames the Dark One for turning him into some candle sticks. Within seconds of Belle and Baelfire agreeing to work with Lumiere to bring back the Dark One (so that Lumiere could be turned back into a human) we find out that he was really transformed by Zelena.
How Did Rumpelstiltskin Get Brought Back To Life?
When Belle and Baelfire arrive at the location of where the original Dark One was created Belle starts to see through the holes of Lumiere’s story. In the cracks she is able to figure out that the Dark One was not responsible for turning Lumiere into candlesticks, and that’s when they find out that it is Zelena, the Wicked Witch of the West is using them to bring back Rumpelstiltskin.
In light of this knowledge Belle is convinced to leave Rumpelstiltskin dead, but Baelfire has other alternatives bringing his father back to life.
Magic Always Comes With A Price
When Baelfire brought back his father Rumpelstiltskin he did so at the expense of his own life. In Once Upon A Time mythology whenever you bring a life back from the dead you have to give a life to do so. But, in a tragic twist of fate Zelena using the dying Baelfire as leverage to get the Dark One’s dagger, and then merge Baelfire and Rumpelstiltskin together.
This is what has made Rumpelstiltskin seem crazy, and always talking about the voices in his head. The two of them being merged together kept Baelfire alive, but it also kept Rumpelstiltskin from being to help Emma and the rest of the gang find Zelena.
So, Emma uses her magic to split the two of them at the request of Baelfire in hopes that his father can help them more than he can.
Magic always comes with a price and this time it’s the apparent death of Baelfire.
I’m sure this isn’t the last we’ve seen of Baelfire, as there is always the possibility that Rumpelstiltskin will use his magic to bring his son back. While we may not be quite sure where Once Upon A Time is going, we do know one thing. The gang will be doing it without the help of Baelfire and Rumpelstilskin.
