Gwyneth Paltow is at it again…..making it very clear that she cannot possibly relate to the average American mother. Her most recent comments spoke to how much easier a “9 to 5” office job is compared to her life “on set.” Not only did she drawn down the ire of moms all over the country, but she got called out in the New York Times by mom and writer, Mackenzie Dawson, in a hilarious letter that dripped with scathing sarcasm.
“So, Gwyneth, you’ve figured out the secret of working parents everywhere: Livin’ la vida desk job is a breeze compared to the 14-hour days of a film set.” Dawson wrote.
Paltrow’s comments on E! garnered thousands of responses, but Dawson’s open letter sparked a fire storm to which Paltrow has yet to respond. (She’s on vacation with her family in some luxurious tropical paradise.)
All kidding aside, I’ve put this tidbit of “news” under the microscope. My initial reaction to Ms. Dawson’s letter was overwhelmingly favorable – I, too, am a working mom who has struggled to balance work and home. I agree that Paltrow’s comments were out of touch with the reality of regular, real-world moms, but after the bravado of the moment passed another reality occurred to me:
Gwyneth Paltrow is a movie star! Do we really expect her to be able to relate with average folks? Why would we ever hold her to any sort of real-world standard? Sure, she stuck her foot so far down her throat that her stomach bile is eating the polish off her toenails, but isn’t a lack of clarity sort of expected from Hollywood? We all got pretty mad to begin with, but in the end it’s clear to me that we should have just shrugged it off from the start.
No matter how beautiful or nice or sweet she seems. Gwyneth Paltrow is an over-indulged, self-involved, spoiled mother of two over-indulged, self-involved, adorable children.
