My husband likes to collect records and recently started getting some 45 rpm records and wanted to get a case to keep them nicely. I looked online and found the Odyssey Case on Amazon for about $60 and ordered it. It is an attractive heavy case that holds about 200 records including their sleeves.
Description of the Case
The Basics: This is a huge case, and very heavy. Even my husband was surprised at the size. Overall it is 26″ wide, 12″ deep and 9″ high. The case is all deep black carpet inside and out. The corners are all protected with black metal corners. There are two metal clasps that snap closed. The handle is made from a very heavy plastic that is screwed on with a heavy duty screw.
The lid for the case will fold back and say parallel with the case or you can lift on the top once it is fully opened and remove it completely. On the front of the case is a brushed silver take with the “Odyssey” name on it.
The inside: The inside dimensions for each of the three sections are 7 5/8″ wide by 10 1/2″ deep. The height of the each section is 7 5/8″ with about 5 1/2″ below and the rest in the lid. This makes it easy to go through your records when they are in the case. The inside of the case is carpet like the outside but feels slightly padded.
The Smell: Now for the bad part. The inside of this case smelled like something nasty when we got it. I would guess it was the glue from gluing the carpet to the inside of the case. I am really sensitive to smells but even my husband thought it was strong. I opened it up and let it sit in the garage for a few days. It still stunk, so I tried putting it outside in a the sun for a few days. That seemed to help a lot and I could not smell it but after it is closed for a few days when I open it again I can still smell it. My husband says it does not bother him anymore, so at this point I guess it is acceptable. I left a message on Amazon about this and another customer said that they had the smell initially as well but that it went away with use.
My husband has just started filling up this nice case and there is plenty of room for the records and their sleeves. It really needs to be relatively full in order to keep the records upright at all times. It appears that the case is very well made and will last for a lifetime. It is a large case so finding a place for it was kind of a challenge but over all my husband is glad we bought it.
Final Thoughts and Rating
I would probably give this Odyssey case 5 stars but I just can’t because of the smell. To me something is just not right. I will admit that I did not try to call the company to see if I could get one that did not have the smell and it is going away over time but still it makes me wonder how good it is to breath that smell. I just can not rate the case as highly based on this one feature. I am going to give the case 3 stars and will recommend because its a great design but beware of the smell.
