COMMENTARY | You have to hand it to the president. He really know how to spike that football and do that end zone dance. Having declared that he has signed up 7.1 million to Obamacare, he has added that the debate is over.
Of course the real number comes from the Rand Corporation study that suggests that of the 7.1 million only 858,000 enrollees were previously uninsured who have actually paid up. The rest were people who had been kicked off their previous health care insurance and/or have experienced sticker shock and have not actually sent a check to their new health insurance provider.
No wonder the venerable Dr. Charles Krauthammer has pronounced the 7.1 million figure to be phony.
The sad fact of the matter is that after upending the nation’s health care system, spending untold billions of dollars, and ruining the lives of millions of Americans, tens of millions will still be without health insurance President Obama can brag all he wants. Obamacare is still the greatest public health disaster in the history of the planet.
Liberals who still support Obamacare have been reduced to bellowing that the health reform system is “the law of the land” that can never be repealed. We just need to bend the knee, tug the forelock, and accept it. Of course Prohibition and Jim Crow were also laws of the land in their time. They are both part of our sad history as examples of failure and worse.
The irony is that Obama’s arrogant chest thumping is likely to enrage an electorate even more than it already is, creating an even greater incentive to go to the polls this November and exact justice. The woman who is wondering where she is going to get her cancer treatment or the man who now had to pay steeper premiums to keep his family covered will not be mollified by the 7.1 million number. That only means that there are 7.1 million victims of a government run amok and a president who refuses to admit his mistakes.
