I suffer from high blood pressure. But I don’t want to give up my favorite fast food breakfast from breakfasts. Below is a review of Hardee’s breakfast menu to find a healthy low-sodium option for those of us with low salt restrictions who still want to enjoy our favorite fast food breakfast during a rushed commute to work or after a Saturday morning soccer game.
The Mayo Clinic recommends people at risk for heart attacks, high blood pressure, swelling, and strokes consume less than 1,500 mg of salt per day. That’s an average of 500 mg per meal.
Because breads and cheeses are high in sodium, all of Hardee’s biscuit, sandwiches, and croissants contain over 500 mg of salt. A Cinnamon ‘N’ Raisin biscuit contains 680 mg. A regular made from scratch biscuit contains 780 mg, and a Jelly biscuit contains 890 mg of salt.
Unfortunately, those are some of the lowest sodium breakfast options at Hardee’s. (To see how McDonald’s, Taco Bell and Burger King’s breakfast options compare, click here)
Hardee’s Sunshine Croissant with Bacon contains 880 mg of salt, and the amount of sodium increases to 1,110 mg if substituting sausage or ham. A bacon, egg, & cheese Texas Toast breakfast contains 570 mg of salt. That number climbs to 790 mg for sausage and 1,030 mg for ham, over twice the amount of salt allowed for a single meal. Add a large Hash Rounds for 630 and you have consumed for sodium than allotted for a single day!
The sodium only increases from there. Hardee’s Country Fried Sausage Biscuit contains 1,150 mg of salt. The country fried steak biscuit contains a similar 1,180 mg of salt, but the country ham biscuit jumps to 1,610 mg of sodium. Hardee’s Loaded Breakfast burrito contains 1,320 mg of salt and the Chicken Fillet Biscuit contains 1,330 mg. The Biscuit ‘N’ Gravy contains 1,390 mg, and the X-tra Bacon, Egg & Cheese Biscuit contains 1,470 mg of sodium.
The Frisco Breakfast Sandwich contains more than a single day’s worth of sodium at 1,570 mg.
The Hardee Breakfast platter with bacon contains 1,670 and the Steak & egg breakfast burrito contains 1,700. The Country Fried Chicken ‘N’ Gravy Breakfast contains 1,750 and the Monster biscuit contains a whopping 2,190 mg of sodium. Even the Low carb breakfast bowl is over the daily limit at 1,550 mg of salt.
Low Salt Options
The only item on Hardee’s breakfast menu that contains less than 500 mg of salt is the small hash rounds for 320 mg. A bowl of grits contains 540 mg and 3 pancakes contain 620 mg of salt. But that is before adding butter, jam or syrup.
Unfortunately, Hardees offers very few low sodium choices for those of us trying to limit our salt intake. Without any healthy options, it is hard to make a smart breakfast choice at Hardee’s. Other fast food restaurants like Taco Bell offer a healthy range of low sodium menu items to give options to people who want to eat as part of a healthier lifestyle. Perhaps Hardee’s will take some of that into consideration when planning new menu items in the future.
