Ford’s Pony car is no stranger to the Big Screen. Steve McQueen ran down the bad guys with his Highland Green Stang in “Bullit,” and in “Gone in 60 Seconds,” helicopters were no match for Nicolas Cage in his Nitro Injected “Eleanor” Mustang. In March, with the release of “Need for Speed,” a new generation Mustang will become Blue Oval’s latest four-wheeled movie star. It’s too soon to tell whether the movie and the Pony will receive the acclaim of its predecessors, but there’s little doubt that there will be an enthusiastic following for this custom Mustang, dressed in cool white, with blue Le Mans stripes — particularly for those movie and car fans with a need for speed.
This one-off 2014 Mustang, which was especially built for the movie, “Need for Speed,” has an aggressive stance with a full, wide-body modification and huge 22″ wheels. Contributing to the new Stang’s muscular look is the addition of twin hood scoops and unique rear-quarter side scoops. Also, the outside door handles have been shaved, and the exterior side mirrors have been dramatically stylized, so much so that they are essentially useless. But, since this car is all about looking ahead, who needs to see behind. Very little has been released about the technical specs of this wild ride, but reports indicate the car is pushing 900 horsepower.
“Need for Speed” is a takeoff of a popular video game by the same name, and Aaron Paul, of “Breaking Bad” fame, stars as the movie’s hero and the Mustang’s driver. Paul’s character was sent to prison for a crime he didn’t commit, so after his release, he’s out for some payback. This scenario, of course, provides plenty of opportunities for smoking tires, crashes, and high-speed pursuits. Expect the sound track to be full of the high-pitch whines of exotic sport cars and turbocharged V8s.
The movie is scheduled for release on March 14, which coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Mustang’s debut in 1964. As an added bonus, the all-new 2015 Mustang will make a brief cameo appearance in the movie. This is certainly an exciting beginning to a year packed with birthday celebrations honoring the original Pony car.
