“Kiera Grant! Wake Up! You have school!”
“I’m up!” Kiera yelled in response to her mother’s wake up call. Kiera is 5 foot and 4 inches tall with medium length black hair with purple streaks. She was dressed in blue jeans and a black V-neck t-shirt. She was sitting at her desk writing in her journal about wanting to be different.
“Then get down here and eat breakfast!” her mother called.
“I’m coming!” Kiera responded. Kiera stopped her writing, placed her favorite pen in her pocket, closed her journal, and went downstairs for breakfast.
“Morning, Mom.” Kiera says to her mother as she sits down at the table.
“Good morning, baby. I’m so proud of you.” Her mother responded.
“Why?” Kiera questioned.
“Why what?” her mother asked.
“Why are you proud?”
“I’m proud because you woke yourself up this morning.”
“Oh. I just wanted to write in my journal before school.”
“Write about what, sweetheart?”
“Nothing just stuff.”
“Stuff you don’t want to talk about with your mother.”
“Not really if you don’t mind.”
“I don’t mind. You’ll tell me when you are ready.”
“You’re welcome, sweetheart.”
Kiera and her mother peeped out the kitchen window to see Kiera’s ride in the drive way.
“James is here. Time to go to school. Love you, Mom.” Kiera says as she gives her mom a kiss on the cheek and heads out to get in James’ car.
“Don’t you look nice this morning?” James says as Kiera gets in the car.
“Why good morning to you too.” Kiera replies.
“You ready for school?” James asked as he pulls out of Kiera’s driveway and heads towards the school.
“Am I ever ready for school?” Kiera responded.
“I will take that as a no. Are you ready to see you boyfriend?”
“Of course.” Kiera said happily.
“What’s that noise for?” Kiera asked.
“You know I don’t like him right?”
“Why not? He’s a great guy.”
“Only when he is around you. When you’re not in hearing distance he’s a basterd.”
“Don’t say that about him.”
“Because it’s mean.”
“What do you mean so? He is my boyfriend and you are my best friend.”
“That you two should get along.”
“And I should honor that?”
“Why? Your boyfriend doesn’t.” James said sarcastically.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” Kiera said looking hurt as she stared at the side of James’ face. James stops at a stoplight and turns to look at her face. He sees the hurt in her eyes. He can’t bare to hurt with the knowledge she clearly doesn’t have nor wants to hear.
“Nothing. Let’s just drop it.” James replies.
“Whatever.” Kiera says as she sits back and crosses her arms across her chest. James can see in her face that she is hurt. One for the reason that he won’t speak his mind and two for the fact that he just implied that her boyfriend wasn’t who she thought he was. If only Kiera knew the side of her boyfriend that everybody else saw when she wasn’t around she might not jump so quick to his defense. James and Kiera sat in silence for the rest of the ride to school.
About two miles up the road James pulls into the school’s parking. He pulls into a parking space close to the side door where students are to enter. He turns off the car, releases his seat belt, gets out the car, walks to the sidewalk, and waits for Kiera to do the same.
Kiera gets out the car and notices James waiting on her. “You didn’t have to wait.”
“I always wait for you.” James stated matter of factly.
“Yeah but today it seemed like you were mad at me,” Kiera stated as she walked to where James was standing.
“Not mad at you, I just dislike you boyfriend very, very, very much.” James said as he lowered his eyes knowing this news would not please his best friend. Kiera had reached him by now.
“Why? That is my boyfriend and I want the two of you to get along.” Kiera said. They start to towards the door.
“Kiera I am sorry to tell you this but me and your boyfriend will never get along.” James replied.
“Why? Can’t you just try? It’s my boyfriend we are talking about.” Kiera said beginning to whine. She couldn’t understand why her best friend was acting this way.
“I know that he’s your boyfriend but when you are not around he is a jerk!” James says starting to get angry, “He pushes around the little guy and I feel like he is going to hurt you!”
“Ok James. I don’t know about him being a jerk….” Kiera started
“Because you’re not around when he is being a jerk!” James said angrily as he stopped walking and grabbed Kiera’s arm to stop her as well. They were halfway from the door.
“Ok! I’m not saying you’re lying, I just don’t want to believe that someone I care about could be so mean.” Kiera said slightly frightened. James had never grabbed her like this or gotten loud towards her.
James could see the fear in her eyes and knew he must be hurting her. “Sorry.” He said as he let her go and they continued their walk to the entrance. James couldn’t believe that he had let he anger at Kiera’s boyfriend get that much power over him especially to the extent of him causing her harm and making her fear him. He had never in the twelve years of knowing Kiera had he ever harmed her or made her fear him. He had always protected her, that was how the met.
“It’s ok.” Kiera reassured him. They walked the finally few steps to the door in silence. When they reached the door James opened it and held it open for Kiera.
“Thanks.” Kiera said as she walked through the door.
“You’re welcome.” James responded as he followed her through the door. James and Kiera continued to walk with each other towards their lockers. Their lockers were right next to each other. They also had the first three and last classes of the day together. The searched through their lockers for their language arts books in silence.
“Kiera?” James said timidly.
“Yes, best friend?” Kiera replied like she always did when he called her name.
“I’m really sorry about earlier. I didn’t mean to grab you like that.” He said.
“It’s fine James.”
“Ok. Now give me a hug.” James said smiling as he turned towards her locker. Kiera giggled as she turned towards him with her arms outstretched. She knew that they were going to do their signature hug that they had been doing for years, it always made her laughed. James bent down slightly, placed his arms around her waist, and lifted her off her feet, shaking her back and forth. They hug liked this for several minutes until he put her back on her feet. Kiera was still giggling.
“Kiera!” a voice yelled up the hall. Kiera and James looked in the direction of the voice to see Kiera’s boyfriend, Damien coming up the hall. Kiera turned back towards James to see him looking in his looker like something had offended him and he wanted to kill it really bad. Kiera opened her mouth to say something to him but it was too late.
“Hey baby.” Damien said in a sultry voice coming up behind Kiera, kissing her on the neck. James slammed his locker closed.
“See you in class Kiera.” James said.
“Save my seat?” Kiera replied.
“Sure.” James said as he turned to begin walking towards their 11th grade language arts class.
“Mine too.” Damien stated
James stopped and turn towards Kiera and Damien. He looked like he was going to say something but he saw Kiera’s face and knew that she didn’t want him being mean to her boyfriend and knew it would upset her. “Fine.” He said as he turned back around and continued on his way to class.
Kiera stared at her best friend’s back as he walked down the hall. She was surprised that when he turned around he didn’t say anything mean to Damien when she knows he wanted to real bad. She was just glad Damien didn’t notice his hesitation. James’ earlier words about Damien going to hurt her rang in her ears. What am I going to do, she thought, and my best friend pretty much hates my boyfriend and think that’s my boyfriend is going to hurt me.
“What’s wrong with him?” Damien asked. Kiera starts to panic thinking Damien is talking about the hesitation.
“What do you mean?” Kiera responded
“The slamming of the locker door.” Damien says as he looks at her.
“Oh nothing. He is just in one of his modes.” Kiera responded nonchalantly not wanting to let on that her best friend hated him.
“Oh. Whatever. Turn around and give me a kiss.” Damien said
Kiera turns around and wraps her arms around his neck to give his a kiss. They kiss for what seems like an eternity. Hoots and hollers begin to sound around the couple, letting them know they had an audience. Kiera begins to smile, this always happened when they kissed. Girls were jealous and boys envious of their relationship.
Damien and Kiera have been dating for about a month since volleyball season ended. They had been talking since school started but when Kiera had decided to play volleyball the coach required all girls to sign a commitment clause that stated, “No boyfriend during the season. If you have one at present you must break up immediately or quit seeing each other for the length of the season. If you are seen dating or being intimate with a man, you will be suspended. First offense is one week suspense. Second offense is two week suspense. Third offense results in being kicked off the team. If your preference lies with females this also applies to you. NO INTIMATE CONTACT WITH ANOTHER PERSON! PERIOD.” If you didn’t sign the clause you couldn’t join the team. So Damien and Kiera didn’t get together until after volleyball season.
That was the warning bell letting students know they had two minutes to get to class.
Kiera and Damien broke apart. Damien smiled at Kiera, grabbed her hand, and walk toward their class, Language arts 11th grade. When they arrived in class they noticed two desks next to James in the same row. One seat had a note with “Kiera” written on it, the other had a “D” written on it.
“Wow. He labeled them.” Damien said
“Yes I did. Is that a problem?” James responded.
“What if it is?” Damien said snarky.
“Ok guys chill. Please.” Kiera cut in before James could respond.
“Of course babe.” Damien said as he touched Kiera’s arm, “but if your friend can’t control his moods.”
“Its best friend, dip….” James started.
“Enough!” Kiera exclaimed.
“Sorry babe.” said Damien. James remained silent staring at Damien.
“James?” Kiera said looking at James. James looked at Kiera when she called his name. He just stared at her for a few seconds before he uttered sorry and looked at the front of the room.
Kiera sighed and then took her seat in between James and Damien. Damien reached across the aisle to grab her hand. Kiera saw out the corner of her eye James’ hands tighten into fists. Kiera sighed and looked at Damien.
The teacher walked in and Damien let go of her hand. Since Kiera knew that both she and James were ahead in this class she decided to pass a note to James.
What’s with the plain D on his paper? -K
It stands for Damien, Dick, Dip-shit, Doucebag, etc. -J
That’s mean -K
Then why did you ask. You knew it would be. -J
Ok. What do you know that I don’t? -K
You don’t want to know. -J
Yes I do. -K
No you don’t. -J
Kiera I can’t -J
Why not. -K
Because I can’t hurt you like that. -J
You’re hurting me by not telling me. -K
Ok so what is it? -K
He’s cheating on you. -J
Kiera froze. She looked at James but James refused to look at her. She turned and looks at Damien. When Damien noticed Kiera staring at him, he looked up and smiled at her. She just stared in response. Damien noticed this and mouthed the words what’s wrong. Kiera didn’t answer she just looked forward.
James felt bad for telling her the truth. It wasn’t like he condone what Damien is doing he just wished that it was Damien that told Kiera.
The bell rung for the end of class. Kiera grabbed her purse, the note James and her were writing, and bolted out of class. James knew where she was going. The one place that not even James could get to. The girls’ restroom.
“Kiera!” Damien yelled after her. When she just disappeared out the door without responding to him, he turned towards James. “Where is she going?!” Damien questioned loudly towards James.
“You need to watch your tone towards me and she is going to get away from you and be alone.” James responded.
“Away from me?”
“Yes away from you.” James said pointing at Damien.
“What did you tell her?”
Damien’s face paled. “That’s a lie!” Damien exclaimed as he regained his features.
“Really? Hey Steph! Come here.” James yelled across the room. Stephanie Frye, a curvaceous tall red head with big boobs, walked over to where James and Damien stood. Damien face seemed to grow a little pale as if he were afraid of what James thought Stephanie knew.
“Yes?” Stephanie said when she got close.
“Did you a Damien hook up?” James asked point blank.
“Why don’t you ask him? He is standing right there.” Stephanie questioned.
“Because he is a liar so can you tell me the truth?” James stated.
“Why would he lie? We didn’t do nothing wrong.” Stephanie said puzzled.
“Because he did do something wrong and are you implying that you two hooked up.” James replied.
“Yea we hooked up multiple times. I have pictures. But I don’t understand.” Stephanie said getting more confused.
“Don’t worry about it. You will understand, but that all I needed thanks. But don’t go nowhere I need a favor.” James said.
“Ok?” said Stephanie still slightly puzzled about what he meant by Damien doing something wrong. Stephanie wasn’t always the bright bulbs in the basket.
James turned towards Damien and said, “You and Kiera are over. Don’t come around her no more. Got that?” Damien nodded his looking defeated. Damien knew his gig was up and if Kiera knew the truth she wouldn’t want to talk to him again, that and if James saw him around Kiera he would surely break one of his limbs for going near her.
“Wait, he was dating Kiera while he was hooking up with me?” Stephanie said looking like the story had finally clicked together.
“Yea. You didn’t know that.” James said thinking, they was always hugged up in the hallway. How could you miss it? She really is dumb.
“Of course I didn’t know. I wouldn’t have hooked up with him if I had known. Kiera was my friend; I wouldn’t have hurt her like this.” Stephanie replied
OK, James thought, let’s make sure she really is dumb and oblivious. “So you didn’t see them in the halls together?”
“No I don’t pay attention to things going on in the hall. I am more worried about catching a glimpse of myself in the mirror.” Stephanie replied.
Well damn, James thought. Damien just shaked his head.
“So what was the favor that you wanted?” Stephanie asked.
“Oh. Can you go get Kiera out the girls’ restroom on the second floor next to the art room please?” James said
“How do you know that’s she is there?” Damien asked.
“That’s none of your business now.” James said. Damien sighed. He knew James would never have told him.
“Fine. Tell Kiera I’m sorry and I will leave her alone.” Damien said as he walked out of the classroom and headed for his next period.
“Ok I am going to go get her.” Stephanie announced.
“Ok. Just make sure she is in class on time.” James replied. I hope she will be ok, He thought.
Five minutes later.
James is sitting at his desk in second period. Kiera’s desk, which was still empty, next to him. The two minute bell sounded. James began to worry that Kiera wouldn’t make it to class on time.
Kiera walked in with a minutes to spare. She looked sad; her eyes bloodshot, her face tear streaked. She sat in the seat next to James and wrote a note just as the teacher walked in.
Stephanie told me everything. Was she your source? – K
Yes and no -J
Meaning what? -K
I only asked after I caught them behind the bleachers. Don’t be mad at Stephanie -J
I’m not mad at Stephanie. I know she can be oblivious. How long have you known. -K
A couple of weeks. -J
What?! Is that why you have been acting strange. -K
Why didn’t you tell me sooner -K
Because it shouldn’t have been me to tell you – J
What do you mean? -K
Since he was the one to do wrong. He should have told you. -J
Kiera started to tear up from how sweet her best friend was always looking out for her.
You’re a great best friend -K
I know, so are you when you’re not blinded by love -J
Kiera started to tear up even more because in her heart she knew he was right. She had begun to start to love him.
How could I have been so stupid? -K
That’s what’s love does to people. -J
Kiera didn’t write back she just folded up the note and stuck it in her pocket. She looked like she would cry again so James reached across the aisle to grab her hand and offer her comfort. Kiera knew by the silent gesture her best friend will be there by her side always no matter how stupid her decisions might be.
Kiera and James muddled through the day before long the final bell rung for the end of class. Kiera met James at his car. James was sitting in the car waiting for her.
“Ready to go home?” James said as Kiera got in the car.
“Yes I am and not to be rude, I kind of want a quiet ride home. Please.” Kiera said
“Sure. I understand.” James replied. He knew that today had been an especially hard day on his best friend. Finding out you boyfriend cheated on you, knowing he must have been cheating for a while, still having to seat by him in the classes where that was you assigned seat, and all the stares of the people who have known since the start of his cheating. Kiera and James silently rode to Kiera’s house. They arrived within fifteen minutes. James pulled in the driveway upon reaching Kiera’s house.
“See you in the morning.” James said.
“Yea. See you in the morning.” Kiera replied as she got out of the car. Kiera walks in the house, turns to wave bye at James, and closes the door.
“Mom! I’m home!” Kiera said after the door is closed.
“Ok baby! Dinners on the table! Go wash your hands, then come and eat!” her mother replied.
“Yes ma’am!” Kiera said as she laid her purse on the table next to the front door and headed down the main hallway towards the bathroom. Upon reaching the bathroom she goes in and washes her hands, dries them and then exits the bathroom. When she arrives in the dining room her mother had set up two place setting and jambalaya on the table. Her mother glances up as Kiera walks in the room.
“Come sit down baby, you look sad. How was school?” her mother says as she entered the room.
“School was fine.” Kiera replies dryly.
“Nothing happened?” her mother questioned. She knew something was wrong with her daughter and she was going to find out what it was.
“Damien and I broke up.” Kiera simply stated as she sat at her place setting.
“I found out he was cheating on me?”
“James told me.”
“Why he do that?”
“Because I grilled him about it.”
“Ok. I don’t understand.”
“For the past couple of weeks James had been acting strange towards Damien.” Kiera begun to explain as she scooped up some jambalaya and placed it on her plate. “This morning on the way to school James started acting real weird about Damien. Anytime I said anything about him being a good guy James would make some snide comment. We even got into an argument over that and I couldn’t understand why he was acting that way, but what made me really start grilling him was first, when Damien asked James to save him a seat James turned around and looked at him like he was going to beat Damien up or at the least cuss him out. Second when we got to class there were nametags on our seats. Mines said Kiera and Damien’s said D.”
“Just a plain D?” asked her mother.
“Yea a plain D. Damien and James almost started fighting. Third when Damien grabs my hand in class, James started to ball up his fist like Damien grabbing my hand made him jealous. So we started passing a note and I questioned him hard about what he knew that I didn’t. Wait, I will just show you the note, it’s in my pocket.” Kiera said as she pulled out the first note her and James wrote. Kiera passed the note to her mother and waited for her to read.
“Oh ok, but how did James find out?”
“From Stephanie who had been the one Damien was cheating on me with.”
“Your friend Stephanie Frye.”
“Well didn’t she know that was your boyfriend?”
“No we didn’t talk like that and she never paid attention in the hallway to see us together.”
“Well ok. Are you doing ok with this?”
“Yea. It hurts but I knew we weren’t going to be together forever. I just didn’t think this was going to be how we broke up.”
“It’s ok. I’m here if you need me.”
“I know mom and so is James.”
“That’s good. Friends are who you need when you go through problems in life.”
“Yea. Well I’m done. I’m going to my room.” Said Kiera as she got up to leave.
“Ok sweetheart.” Her mother replied
With that Kiera went upstairs to her room. She was texting James that she was about to take a nap. She placed her phone in her back pocket and turned into her room.
“Hi.” Said a dark figure on her bed.
Kiera froze and stared at the figure. The figure looked up and into Kiera’s eyes. Kiera’s immediately knew those glowing deep brown eyes.
“Don’t scream.” The figure said.
Kiera opened her mouth to let out a loud scream but before a sound could be made the dark figure was on her. His hands covered her nose and mouth cutting off her air supply. It wasn’t long before spots begun to appear in her vision. She kicked out at her attacker but it did no good. Her attacker managed to capture her legs in between his own. Her vision grew dark like a black ring closing in. her head felt like it would explode. The darkness continues to close in like a black hole eating her field of vision. Her struggles became weak. She slowly faded into darkness. Her last thought was, why? Why is my father trying to kill me?
Kiera woke up kind of groggy. She was in a dark room with no windows. Is this heaven or hell? She thought, well at least I’m not dead, but where am I.
“Dad! Dad!” Kiera yelled in hopes that her kidnapper would come down to make her be quiet.
A door open and the room lit up with light. Kiera could make out some steps that lead up to a door and in that doorway was a shadowy figure.
“What do you need Kiera?” said the shadowy figure.
“I need answers.” Kiera demanded
“Then come up stair and I will give what you seek.” her father said. Kiera was weary about trusting him but right now her choices were either stay in this dank basement or go upstairs. She chose to go upstairs. Kiera went upstairs. When she reached the top of the stairs, her father stood their looking at her for several seconds. Kiera began to feel uneasy, she was beginning to think he might push her back down the stairs and close the door. He finally turned and began to walk down the hallway.
“Follow me.” He said.
“As if I had a choice. I don’t know where I’m going.” Kiera said snidely. Her father just kept walking. They walked down a long hallway that several door along the side. One door was open and Kiera could see that it was a bathroom. Kiera trying to get familiar with her surroundings, she could see the front door. She mad the mental note of the only exit she had seen. She turned back around and faced forward. They continued to walk down the hall until they reached the end of the hall. The hall opened up into what looked like a dining room. Kiera’s father walked in first.
“Take a seat.” He ordered.
“Fine.” Kiera said as she sat down in a seat and watched her father walk around the table and sit in the seat across from her.
“So what do you want to know?” he asked.
“What do I call you?” Kiera asked.
“Why not Dad?” he answered in response.
“Because you might have given sperm to create me but you are not my father. A father wouldn’t walk out on his three MONTH baby and then come back to kidnap her.” Kiera said with venom leaking from her voice.
“Fine. Your right and I am sorry…” he began.
“Sorry doesn’t cut it, but I got over your betrayal a long time ago. Just answer the question. What do I call you?” Kiera said.
“You can call me John.” He replied.
“Ok John. What time is it?”
“No. In the morning.”
“I have to go to school.”
“You are not leaving.”
“K. why did you kidnap me?”
“To kill you.”
“What?!?!” Kiera said jumping up out of her seat. “Kill me! Why?!”
“To trigger the gene.”
“The necromancer gene.”
“The what?!” Kiera questioned as her voice went up an octave.
“The necromancer gene. I’m a necromancer born of two necromancer parents. That’s how most necromancers are created. Their born, and are necromancers from birth. You on the other hand are different.”
“Ok stop! Your crazy and I want to go home.”
“You’re not going home anytime soon.”
“Please, my birthday is in two days.” Kiera pleaded
“I know.” John replied, “That’s when I will kill you.”
At Kiera’s House
“Kiera! Wake up! Time for breakfast!” Kiera’s mother yelled. A few minutes past. Kiera’s mom was thinking Kiera might be tired from staying up all night thinking about her break up with Damien. A few more minutes past.
“Kiera Grant! Get out of bed and get down here!” Kiera’s mother yelled. Why is that girl not down yet, she thought. Kiera’s mother only wanted to give Kiera a little room because she knew the first break up is always hard but at the rate the girl was going she would be real late. Kiera had never been this late getting up and she would have yelled something down by now.
Kiera’s mom looked out the window to see James’ car in the driveway. Kiera’s mom went to the front door and waved James in the house. James turned off, the car, and went in to Kiera’s house.
“Good Morning Ms. Grant.” James said when he entered the door.
“Good Morning James. Kiera isn’t down yet. I’m going up to get her.” Ms. Grant said as she started for the stairs.
“I can do it Ms. Grant.” James said.
“You’re sure?” asked Ms. Grant
“Yes ma’am.” replied James
“Ok. Thanks sweetie.”
“You’re welcome Ms. Grant.” James said as he headed upstairs. Kiera’s room was up the stairs to the left at the end of the hall. Her room was the last door on the left. James walked into Kiera’s room thinking he was going to see her back while she was finishing getting dressed. Kiera’s room looked great, the bed was made, and no clothes on the floor, but her room was missing something. It was missing her.
James stepped out of Kiera’s room and went back up the hall to the door next to Kiera’s room. It was the restroom. He knocked on the door.
“Kiera?” James said to the door as he waited for an answer. When he received no answer he knocked again. When he still received no answer, he tried the door. It was open. He opened the door and went inside. There was still no Kiera. James went back down stairs.
“Ms. Grant?” he asked.
“Yes James?” Ms. Grant replied walking out the kitchen.
“Did Kiera get ride with someone else?” he asked looking down. Maybe she is mad at me for telling her the truth about her boyfriend or maybe she is mad because I didn’t tell her sooner. He thought.
“No James. Of course not. You have been her ride since you got license.” Ms. Grant assured him.
“How can you be so sure she didn’t get another ride because she was mad at me?”
“Well for one because she told me the whole story last night at dinner and she didn’t seem mad at you only at him for not telling her. Second her purse is still by the front door where she leaves it so she doesn’t forget it whenever she leaves.” Ms. Grant said as she pointed towards where Kiera’s purse sat by the front door.
“What?!?!” James exclaims as he followed where Ms. Grant’s figure pointed. He began to get a sense of dread build up in his stomach.
“Why you ask?”
“Because Kiera wasn’t in her room or the bathroom and her bed was made up.” He said as he turned back towards Ms. Grant. Her face began to pale.
“Let me get this straight. She wasn’t in her room or the bathroom, and her bed was made up.”
“Yea.” He said. Ms. Grant’s face paled as she ran back in the kitchen and grabbed the phone.
“Why?” he asked as he followed her in the kitchen.
“It means she didn’t sleep in her room.” Ms. Grant said to James and someone must have come on the line because she said, “Hello? Yes I want to report a missing child.”
At John’s house
Kiera ran for the front door which was back up the hall way she had just came down. She ran as fast as she could. She had almost reached the door when she felt a weight begin to fall on her back. John had jumped on her and now they were crashing to the floor. Kiera began to wiggle trying to get away.
“You’re not going anywhere.” John said in her ear.
“Please let me go.” Kiera said beginning to cry as her struggles continued to fail in her achieving her ultimate goal of freedom.
“Not until I trigger the necromancer gene.” He said harshly. Kiera began to cry harder. He’s crazy; she thought there’s no such thing as a necromancer gene. John then got off of her, and she thought, He’s going to let me go. My crying must have worked on him. He hauled her to her feet, and begun to walk back up the hall. She realized that he hadn’t decided to let her go and she began to struggle. She kicked at his legs and twisted and bucked hoping to break his hold or at least loosened his hold, so she could get free. Her struggles did no good the first door they reached, he opened and walked her in. he walked towards the bed in the center of the room and tossed her on it.
“I have business to attend to, so you’ll be locked in here so you don’t try to get away.” John said as he walked towards the door and began to close the door.
“John?” Kiera said
“Please don’t do this?” John sighed and continued to close the door.
“Dad!” Kiera yelped in another desperate attempt.
“You’re not changing my mind Kiera.” He said and with that shut the door and locked it.
Kiera began to cry. She couldn’t believe her luck these past couple of days. Yesterday she found out her boyfriend was cheating on her and now her father was going to kill her on her birthday. Thinking about this made her want to cry harder but her instinct told her not to. She needed to devise a plan that would make her get out of this situation. She got off the bed and heard a thump. She looked around but didn’t know where the sound was or where it had come from. She shook that off and continued to devise a plan she looked around the room, there was a bed, a dresser by the door and a window with purple curtains next to the bed. She walked to the window hoping she could use it as an escape. She pulled the curtains apart and was greeted with bars. So much for that plan, she thought. She next walked to the dresser and searched each drawer. There was nothing in them. This room was the perfect room to be held captive in. the room was completely bare, there wasn’t even sheet on the bed. Kiera walked back towards the bed and saw a flash of silver out the corner of her eye. She turned towards it and began to walk in that direction. When she was close she realized what it was that she had seen. It was a toilet sitting in the darkest corner of the room.
Kiera sighed. He must have been planning to kidnap me for a while, she thought. She walked back towards the bed and sat down. She then leaned back on the bed and really started to cry. She was locked in room with no way to escape. Not even something to use as a weapon. She was trapped and there was nothing she could do about it.
At Kiera’s house
Police fluttered through Kiera’s house looking for evidence of where Kiera might have gone. The police thought Kiera might have just run a way, but James and Ms. Grant knew Kiera would never run a way no matter how bad her life got. The police, trying to pacify Ms. Grant and James, put together a search party. They searched the woods and the houses in a 5 mile radius.
“James you need to go to school.” Ms. Grant told James as he sat at the table looking at a picture of him and Kiera at her last birthday.
“Not until I know she is ok.” He replied dryly with tears in his eyes.
“Oh James, go to school I will let you know the minute I know anything.” she said as she walked over to where James sat at the dining room table. He had already missed his first three classes of the day. His mother had called to find out where his was because the school calls when then student isn’t in class. His mother had received a call and had begun to worry. When she realized what had happened to Kiera she didn’t even force him to go to school. She probably knew it would be useless.
“Thanks Ms. Grant, but that my best friend and I want to know the exact same second. So I’m not leaving.” James said firmly continuing to look at the picture. More tears came to his eyes. “What if they don’t find her?”
“They will find her.”
“How can you be sure?”
“I have faith.”
“Ok they will find her and put the basterd who took her in the ground.”
Two days later. Kiera’s birthday.
At John’s house.
Kiera was still in that same room. A few hours after john had left that day he returned. He placed some sheets and some pizza on the dresser next to the door. After he placed the food and sheets he left and re-locked the door. He returned an hour later to retrieve her dishes. He made her place the dishes on the dresser and back away from the door.
John returned to Kiera’s room three times each day to give her breakfast, lunch, and dinner. An hour after he gave her each meal he returned to retrieve her dishes. Every time he came to her room she tried to talk to him trying to get him to change his mind, but he never responded.
Today was her seventeenth birthday. She accepted that this might be her last day on earth if she couldn’t figure out a way to get out. She was running out of time and she didn’t even know how much. When john came to bring her breakfast she jumped thinking this was it but he didn’t come all the way he just placed her breakfast and began to leave again.
“What time will I die?” she questioned before he could close the door and lock it.
“At 5.” He said and began to close the door again.
“What time is it now?” She said quickly
“10 in the morning.” With that he closed the door.
Her heart dropped, she had seven hours left to live. She missed her mom and James. They were probably worried sick about her. She frantically looked around the room again hoping there was something she had missed. If she died without fighting with all she had to stay alive then she wasn’t helping her mom and James, she was letting them down. She heard car doors closing, she ran for the window to see what was going on. Two men got out of a sleek black sedan and walked towards john. He must have knew them because they shook hands and begun to talk. They must have been there to help him kill me. Once they finished talking they headed for the backyard. That must bee where I will die because when john wasn’t checking on me he was in the backyard building something, she thought. What is he building and how will he use it to kill me.
Kiera didn’t want to die but there was nothing of use in this room, and that was when she heard it. A noise.
It sounded like a phone vibrating on wood. She looked at the floor and realized the floor was wooden. It was then that she remembered texting James right before she walked into her room and placing her phone in her back pocket. That must have been the thump she heard two days ago.
At Kiera’s house
James was in Kiera’s room. He had been sleeping there in hopes that when he woke up she would be laying next to him like all the times they had sleep overs. He had her purse in his lap. I miss her so much, he thought. I wish I could see her smile. That gave him an idea. He decided to look in her purse and find her phone so he could go through her pictures. He searched her [urse but couldn’t find her phone. He then got off the bed and searched her dresser and bed side table. He couldn’t find her phone. He decide to call her phone. It rung and rung, but he couldn’t hear the ringing or the vibrating in the room. The ringing stopped and he figured the voice mail was getting ready to pick up. He started to pull the phone away from his ear.
“hello?” a feminie voice answered. James frozed because he didn’t expect anyone to pick up. The voice sounded like Kiera.
“Kiera?” James responded tentatively.
“James?!” Kiera responded. James heart leaped for joy. He had missed the sound of his best friend’s voice.
“where are you?” he asked.
“I don’t know. I can’t see a street sign and I am locked in a room.” She responded
“did you see anything when they took you?”
“no, I was unconscious.”
“why didn’t you call us sooner Kiera if you had your phone.”
“because I didn’t know I had it. I had forgot that I had texted you after dinner and placed my phone in my back pocket. Then when the man put me in this room it fell out of my pocket and onto the floor. With all the confusion I forgot.”
“that’s fine sweetie. The police are looking for you.”
“tell them hurry.”
“because the man said he was going to kill me at 5pm.”
James looked at the clock on Kiera’s bed side table. It read 11:30. James began to panic. “ok, can’t people track their phones if there lost or stolen.”
“yea go on to www.phonehome.com. My username is kiera16 and my password is bestfriends with no space. Hurry my phone only has ten percent and the trace wont work if my phone is off.” Kiera said in panic.
” ok. I will. Let’s get off the phone so we can preserve your battery long enough for the trace.”
“ok bye.” Kiera said as she ended the call. James looked at his phone, this was his chance to save his best friend. He raced for across the room and loaded up Kiera’s computer in five minutes. Five more minutes later he had the website up and trace started. Two minutes later the trace had an address. He wrote the address down and raced down stairs to Ms. Grant and the police. They needed to get moving Kiera was in Cleveland , OH and they were in Dayton, OH.
At john’s house. Three hours later.
It had been three hours since her phone call with James. She really hoped he had traced her phone because now her phone was dead. Kiera continue to hear building being done in the back of the house. It sounded like the were creating something big and she couldn’t see what it was. She started to pace the floor. The building in the backyard ceased. A few minutes later she heard the lock click open. She paused in her pacing and turned to face the door. John and his two henchmen stold in the doorway.
“I decided it was cruel to make you wait another hour and a half and we had finished production early, so we decided to move your death up.”
“to when?’ Kiera asked looking scared
“to now. It will take us about thirty minutes to prep you. So lets go.” John said as he began to reach for Kiera.
“NO!!!” she screamed as she ran farther into the room. John reached her but she turned around and kneed him in the groin. He dropped like a ssack of potatoes. The two henchmen then came after her. She kicked one in the shin and he stumbled. She tried to k9icked the other but he caught her foot. She balled up her fist and swung it like a baseball bat. She hit him in the nose and blood started to squirt out. He fell to the floor holding his nose. The third ine came up behind Kiera and grabbed her arms and pinned them to her back. She tried to kick him but he managed to dodge all her hits. She then stopped struggling and took a deep breath. Next she swung her head back as fast and hard as she could. She heard a crack and the man yell as he released her. She then ran for the door. As she was reaching the door she felt a hand on her lefyt ankle. It grabbed and pulled her down, it started to drag. She fell to the floor with a crashing blow that threaten to make her pass out. She took another deep breath and then turned over. She took her right foot and skicked at her attacker’s face. He released her ankle. Kiera got upand ran towards the door again but this time she felt someone on her back. This timke her attacker landed on her back pushing her to the ground. The other two attackers came up beside them and grabbed her arms. The one on top of her got up and the three of them placed her arms behind her back. They then lifted her off the ground and one of the attackers grabbed her feet to keep her from kicking them again. It took all three of them but the managed to get her outside and towards the mechanism john had been building. Kiera looked at it. It looked like a lift mechanism. It had a pukly at the top and rope. It also looked to have an electrical operating system, with a controller a little ways away from the mechanism that had a large bucket under it.
“what’s in the bucket?”Kiera asked
“acid.” John replied as they walked closer. Kiera began to struggle again. She couldn’t believe she would die on her birthday. One of her attackers pinched her in her left shoulder blade. Her body went limp.
“what did you do?” Kiera screamed. She had no control over her body.
“I hit your pressure point. That pressure point inmobilizes your body for several minutes.” The attacker that pinched her replied. ” I tried to hit it earlier but you’re a fighter. I can’t wait to see what your like after your powers set in.”
Oh no, Kiera thought. He’s crazy too. They walked over to the mechanism raised Kiera’s hands over her head and tiedthe rope around them tight. The three men stepped back.
“Don’t worry Kiera. Very soon you will be a necromancer like me.” Jphn said and with that he walked over to the controls and began to lift Kiera over the tub of acid. Kiera wanted to scream but was afraid it might make him drop her sooner. once she was completely above the tub john began to lower her into the tub slowly. She was halfway in her descent when she heard the closing of car doors. She wasn’t the only to hear it because her descent stopped. Kiera decided this was her chance, she opened her mouth and let out a loud, high oitched scream. The men flinched. John hit the button to drop her into the acid. In seconds police, James, and her mother busted into the yard. The last thing Kiera saw before she was completely submerged was the paniced faces of her mother and James.
“Kiera!” James and Ms. Grant screamed in unison.
