COMMENTARY | Lots of eyebrows were raised, according to Business Insider, when it was revealed that Chelsea Clinton, the once and possibly future first daughter, received $600,000 for going fluff pieces for NBC News.
Instapundit’s Glenn Reynolds was moved to snark, “As pay for a correspondent, it’s absurd. As a bribe for a possible future President, it’s cheap.” Presumably he meant Hillary Clinton.
To put that money in perspective, the younger Ms. Clinton was paid $26,724 for every minute she was on the air. And what sort of product did she produce?
“Clinton’s 14 past appearances identified by Business Insider included news segments where she interviewed the Geico gecko and feel-good ‘Making a Difference’ pieces like one on foster grandparents and another on a program to provide therapy dogs to soldiers. She was also interviewed by other NBC reporters about her charity work and role in President Barack Obama’s inauguration. In total, Clinton’s segments from the past 2 years and seven months lasted just shy of 58 minutes.”
Nice work if you can get it. It is good to be a Clinton, even if one has never actually held public office.
To be sure the 58 minutes does not include any prep time, though one suspects that most of the grunt work was done by professional NBC News producers. Still it just might be good experience for when she becomes her mom’s press secretary. After all, how many reporters are going to go hard on a woman whom many of us first experienced as a cute eight year old? Besides those meanies as Fox News, obsessed as they are about getting facts.
One has to think that for the same amount of money NBC might have been able to hire a half a dozen or so bear reporters and turned them loose to ferret out some hard news and put it on the air. But none of them are likely to be a scion of one of America’s most peculiar royal families.
