Fans have devoted so much time into the lives of Ted, Robyn. Barney, Marshall and Lily. I didn’t know what to think when the episode first ended, and now, after having time to sleep and think on it, I find myself liking the series finale quite a bit. My issue is with the entire final season as a whole. I don’t think fan angst stems from the finale episode. Instead I believe it comes from the long drawn out final season, which in the end was a huge waste of time.
As the final season played out, even seeing Robyn and Barney get married, I just had a feeling that the Ted and Robyn story wasn’t complete. Even as the mother was revealed, her storylines were still so minimal throughout the final season. In my head it became more obvious that the reason Ted was telling the Story in the first place was because the mother would ultimately be dead. Right from the beginning of the Finale episode, Barney was acting like he had a secret he was hiding, and as soon as they revealed they were getting a divorced, I knew the rest of the episode would confirm my suspicions.
I think fans feel cheated that the final season was essentially wasted on the build up to a wedding that was undone so early. The stories of Marshal and Lily could have and should have been more developed. In my opinion the creators missed a major opportunity by dragging the wedding out so long. The wedding could have taken place in the second episode. The rest of the season could then have been more devoted to developing Robyn’s storyline becoming a big time news anchor, her marriage to Barney, and of course Ted’s relationship with the mother. Marshall and Lily then would also have had an actual meaningful storyline.
I found myself becoming annoyed with Marshal’s road trip, and uninterested in Lily’s story for most of the first half of the season. A feeling that got even more accentuated when it was revealed she was getting water served to her the entire season.
Many of the stories that were revealed in the finale episode should have been in my opinion developed throughout the course of the final season. Hints could have been dropped that Barney and Robyn were heading for divorce without ever revealing it until the final episode. The reasons why Ted and the Mother took so long to eventually get married could have been more dissected. Marshall being offered a judgeship and Lily hiding her pregnancy would have been much better to watch had it taken place in their apartment or at the bar rather than at the hotel where the wedding was.
All of this could have been easily accomplished without ever taking away from the two bombshells that we found ourselves dealing with at the end of the Finale episode. Essentially taking the cast out of their familiar surroundings and transplanting them into an unknown locale, was the mistake that doomed the final season.
Like I said earlier I liked the finale, it was the final season that I did not like. I would have liked to see Ted have had more of an internal struggle about the Mother and Robyn, even if done more subconsciously. The same goes with Barney and marriage, the creators could have had him struggle with it especially while Robyn was traveling for work. Again it could have been done in a subtle way as not to reveal any of the secrets from the finale episode. The fact that Robyn and Barney were married and Ted had found the one we were led to believe would be his one and only, would have made the series finale a bigger shocker. Especially if we the audience had invested more time getting to know the mother.
This is just one fan’s opinion, but unlike the other fans that are upset with the finale episode I am upset with the way the creators set up the entire final season.
