Writing about my favorite video game character is like choosing which of my children to save from a burning house. I’ve been playing video games on a regular basis since I was a little kid. My first experience was on a Commodore 64 and in the years since I’ve played games on at least a dozen different systems.
I’ve dipped into the game worlds of hundreds of characters over the years. By far the longest I’ve ever spent with a character was my Tauren druid that I created in 2005 in World of Warcraft. I’ve logged over a year of play time on her since then. We’ve been through a lot together, but as far as personality goes, she’s underwhelming.
One game stands out in my mind as possibly the funniest game I’ve ever played. That game is Borderlands 2.
The graphics are solid, the storyline is engaging, and the score is pretty good too. Where the game really stands out, however, is the character dialogue.
Every character, from the main non-player characters to the most trivial canon fodder enemies, have hilarious lines. I found myself, sitting alone in my house, laughing like a crazy person more than once.
It’s hard to narrow it down to just one character. Claptrap returns from the first Borderlands game to guide the player through the world of Pandora. His commentary makes the process of getting through the tutorial stage of the game far less tedious.
Later in the game you encounter Tiny Tina, an insane orphan who happens to be a demolitions expert. Every line of dialogue she has is quote-worthy. Her quests are fun and I was sorry to see her subplot end.
Despite the stiff competition, my favorite character of the game was Handsome Jack. A charismatic sociopath, Handsome Jack enjoys taunting the player throughout the game. His over-the-top, murderous antics aside, he was also an intriguing mystery.
As you progress through the game, you have the opportunity to collect clues and try to piece together who he is and what motivates him. Also, what’s with his face? No, seriously, who wears a face mask that’s evidently made from an actual face?
For anyone who’s never played Borderlands 2, I can’t recommend strongly enough that you pick up a copy and give it a try. Get to know Handsome Jack and see if you agree with my pick.
