As a former heartburn sufferer, I have tried a lot of natural and some not-so-natural ways of keeping it at bay. If you have ever experienced that awful burning pain in your chest that we all know too well as heartburn, then I have my top five best natural ways to treat heartburn. These are things that I try to do on a daily bases and works great for me.
Never Lie Down on a Full Stomach
Keep yourself upright and do not go to bed for at least 2-3 hours after a meal. This gives your stomach time to digest the food you have eaten and it won’t be giving you trouble when you are trying to get your rest. You should consider allowing gravity to work in your favor. If you have trouble with heartburn you should raise the head of your bed and let gravity help keep that acid where it belongs. Just by raising your bed a few inches it will keep the acid from traveling back up your esophagus. I use a cement block and just put the legs of the bed into the hole of the block and this keeps the bed in place and raises it to a good height.
I find that if I incorporate apples throughout the day for dessert, snack or as part of the meal, it helps keep the pain of heartburn away. You can use any of your favorite apples, the type and flavor is up to you. It is a delicious and healthy way to keep that nasty acid where it belongs.
Eat Small Meals
Eat several small meals a day instead of 3 big ones and make the last meal of the day your smallest meal. This way your stomach is not full when you go to bed and your stomach does not have to work so hard to digest this meal before bed time.
Take your time eating your meals. Chewing your food completely will help with the digestion process making your food digest quicker. Take the time to enjoy your food and taste each bite. It will also help you feel full faster and you will eat less.
Take a Walk
Taking a brisk walk after a meal will aid in digestion process and keep that food from giving you problems. It will digest much quicker and help burn extra calories in the process.
