Dorothy’s journey started from the little farmhouse in Kansas, mine started in South Carolina. I pick up this part of my journey in Los Angeles, California. I recently obtained management for my reality television projects by Kenneth Hartung Management. So, before I get into this part of my story let me say, I don’t believe that anything I experience or any person I meet is by accident. I don’t believe that being in the right place at the right time or even the wrong place at the wrong time is by chance. My belief, present-tense, is that we are where we are because of an orchestrated master plan that we have absolutely no control over. I believe that in whatever state we’re in, we have the power of choice. We can’t choose for others and others can’t choose for us. However, we can definitely choose for ourselves. We have a right to say ‘yes’ or ‘no’ and we have the choice to use our experiences as life lessons or simple defeat. If we begin to look at our obstacles as life lessons we will then realize that learning is always good, thus, all things do work together for our good and to keep us aligned with the master plan.
Munchkin Land – My journey to Kenneth was not in my personal plan but obviously in my master plan. As a matter of fact, Reality TV & Film was not on my radar at all. It seemed like I just “fell” into it like the little farmhouse just fell into Munchkin Land. This person knew that person, and this person thought that person would be a good person to talk to, and so on. But that explanation would go against my core beliefs, so the master plan rules. My journey road has many side trails and they all lead to different “meant to be” destinations yet they are all connected to the main road. I’ll discuss the side trails another time so that I don’t lose focus on the yellow brick road.
Shortly after meeting Kenneth and discussing my newly found dreams and aspirations in Reality TV, I knew that he was the person that I wanted in my corner for this portion of my career journey. I had met and hired managers before, for my scripted content and sometimes your personalities simply don’t gel. They were not major players in the master plan. I didn’t find this true of Kenneth. I actually found it refreshing to see that he got what I was trying to do and he got me. He understood my hopes and expectations of success and immediately began taking notes and making calls to see that all my needs were met. He brainstormed on the networks that may be a good fit for the content that I had already began developing and advised me of the networks that were not. I was impressed to say the least. I liked him because he also had goals that he was striving to attain and I knew that I was placed in his path because I, too, was a part of his master plan.
Meet the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodsman, and the Cowardly Lion. What happened next, however, is how I knew he got me. He got a call from one of his contacts at a major television network that mainly deals in Reality TV. His contact asked for a specific type of show. Even though none of the content I had discussed with him fell into the scope of what they were asking for, he called me anyway. He asked if I had anything that would fit their description and, well, of course I did. I can think of ideas all day long and “just happened” to have written something up on one last month that I had not shared. It wasn’t an idea that I was emotionally attached to, nor did I care about who they cast in the major roles as I did with my first show idea, “On The Rise.” On my journey I met others who embarked on their journey and we were able to meet each other’s needs while walking in the same direction.
I can actually see the Emerald City now. Kenneth believes the idea is a winner and begins to draw up the paperwork to present to the network on two of the ideas I presented. But then comes more obstacles. The living Apple Trees appear and begin to throw apples. The apples they are throwing that were meant to be a tasty piece of fruit actually hurt. Then the lions, the tigers, the bears appear – Oh my! And finally, the Wicked Witch of the West. The show that I didn’t want to just sell on paper, that was near and dear to my heart, starts taking turns that are expected, yet unexpected. I feel, maybe if I explain to everyone one more time what I envision and how I see us getting there, I’ll get everyone back on the journey road with me.
The Good Witch — Kenneth said to me, “BJ, you’re on the yellow brick road. Don’t let these obstacles block your road to success.” He was basically telling me that I needed to wish those who weren’t in it for the long haul well and let my pain melt into oblivion – it is business, not personal. Everyone has their own motivations and aspirations and looking out for self is more natural than looking out for someone else. My “A-ha” on moment happened just then. I stopped looking at the apples as obstacles and instead looked at them for what they were, fruit. The apples were food that I could eat to help me get stronger for the rest of my journey and move on.
I’ve arrived at the Emerald City – Kenneth sent me the paperwork to review. I am at the gate, a place that I’ve wanted to be for a very long time. I’m at the point of my highest test, to unlock the door and confront the Wizard. I know that on the other side, there is no Wizard. There is no man or woman out there who has all the answers. There is no legendary blueprint that controls success. I know that what I needed to arrive at Emerald City was in my heart all the time. It was my faith that I could do this and that I could overcome each and every obstacle along the way, with help of course. I can do all this because I’m only a small part of the master plan. I know that once I complete this journey, I will click my heels three times and travel back to the beginning of yet another journey and do it all over again. I move in ways that was specifically planned for me.
