Home building can be a once in a lifetime experience, because you get to build a house only once in your lifetime! It can be expensive, worrying and a time consuming process. But it can also be a satisfying kind of experience once completed.
We are currently in the process of building a two-storied house back in our home country of India. It is located on a mere 5.5 cent of area, but it is our dream house. It is being built from the ground up and we get to make all the decisions that go into the house. Here are our top four experiences from having a house built from the ground up.
1. It is expensive – Even with a house built on a small piece of land, our house costs around $850,000. This includes everything, from paint to wood, from flooring to the kitchen cabinets. It is very easy to go overboard when you start making selections for each item and hence exceed the initial limit. That is why, it is always necessary to look at the bigger picture and get the house built without exceeding your budget. That means you may need to sacrifice for a lesser costing tiles or lesser expensive choice of kitchen cabinets.
2. It is time consuming – We have been having our house built by a contractor since 2012, and it is not done yet. They are beginning to put the finishing touches on the house but still it may take another year. So if you are planning to build a house and stay in it, add buffer time to the original schedule since it is bound to go out of schedule
3. It can be worrisome – Since building a house can be expensive, there are days when we are calculating our finances and checking if we have enough. We have had to tighten our expenses some months and even have to take an additional loan to ensure we are able to pay the home mortgage. But in the end, it is worth it since we get to own and live in a house of our dreams.
4. It is satisfying – In the end, you get to live in the house of your dreams, and it is a satisfying experience. Everything in that house is something that you thought about and worked hard to put it there. We cannot wait to have our house completed to start interior decorating to the way we want it to be!
