Publishing a book is quite a wild ride but worth every little reward you get. I had been in the self-publishing industry for about two years. I was a bit shaky about publishing my stuff online because I was writing poetry. One iron-clad rule about writing and selling poetry is that it tends not to sell really well. Somehow, I managed to sell a few kindle copies and 180 other print copies of my first book entitled “America vs. America.” The one thing I didn’t stay with a particular genre which is one key to selling more books. I went from poetry to politics to finance and didn’t get anywhere. The main point to it is that you must have one or two main genres either fiction or non-fiction that you know a lot about and/or have the most passion in. These are two key concepts that you must bear in mind while writing and publishing your book.
Three and a half years after publishing that first book of poetry and a book called Rising On Debt, I finally have found my footing with the book How To Write a Song In 30 Minutes or Less, my first in the music genre, which is the genre I happen to know the most about.
This book is just the beginning of the tip of the iceberg for me as an author. Marketing this is a different animal for me. It is the first time I got the idea to use message boards and forums from a book called Effortless Marketing by Jeff Rivera. I suggest buying this book that emphasizes that only 10 minutes a day is needed to effectively get in front of people who are in your subject and can benefit from your information.
Another thing to remember is to not just publish only one book to Kindle. Build a reputation as an author with more books on your subject. I plan to write a follow up to this book that goes into greater depths on how songwriting hooks are conceived and written as well as different ways to compose attractive melodies, in keeping with the ongoing change in sound trends.
If you have a broad subject that has a lot of subtopics, use your writing to write about other aspects of the main subject that you specialize in. The possibilities will open up instantly.
