Proof that attitude changes everything, it could have been the worst, but it turned out to be the best wedding ever. Picture the scene … a weekend wedding at a game park in South Africa with a tree house for accommodation … perfection right? Then let me tell you about the bride whose designer dress had not yet arrived, the ants and the swirling rainclouds overhead.
The best and the worst of it
The bridal couple’s theme matched their location and the bridesmaids wore tan and green, a glitzy camouflage in the game park. The wedding dress only arrived the night before the wedding because the designer was appearing on a live TV talk show and went to the interview before finishing the dress. Instead of crying the bride was delighted when her dress arrived and we celebrated with champagne.
Sleeping in a tree house was more fun than imaginable and surrounded by chirping birds it was impossible not to wake up happy. The champagne breakfast added to the giggles of the day while everyone got ready.
Shortly after her walk down the aisle the rain arrived. Fortunately the bride had prepared ahead and recited, to all the worried aunts, the Irish blessing that begins,
‘Happy is the bride that rain falls on …’
Then the party began … first for the ants, who started feasting on the wedding cake before the guests had arrived (the brides advice was simply not to eat the bottom layer of the cake) then for the revelers (including several types of buck) who partied in the safari atmosphere until the wee hours.
Advice for brides
It’s not about the décor, the food or the weather, it’s about love. This is the day you’re marrying the love of your life and that is all that matters.
Hold onto your sense of humor. Life is full of challenges so you might as well begin your first day together as Mr and Mrs with laughter.
If you can afford it, hire someone else to take care of the details, give them your color scheme and a theme to work with then let them do their job. If you can’t afford a wedding planner keep it simple. The less there is to go wrong, the happier your day will be.
Remember, your wedding day is supposed to be a celebration of love, not a day of stress.
