Anemia is a disease caused by lack of enough red blood cells in our circulatory system. The red blood cells are unique in that they aid in transport of oxygen in the body. There is a pigment in red blood cells referred to hemoglobin that is responsible for this function. With a reduced volume of red blood cells, there will be a reduction of hemoglobin hence a poor supply of oxygen to the rest of the body. Let’s look at my experience with anemia.
I started to feel generally weak and tired even when I was not working. Of course it was an abnormal observation in my body, normally, we are supposed to feel tired after we work, not when we wake up! I also had fatigue and breathing problems. I would wonder for some time why it was difficult for me to inhale and exhale not knowing that all these was as a result of anemia. I also observed that my skin had also turned somehow pale. At work, I was making a lot of silly errors, my concentration had become very poor. Those are the main signs of anemia, if any one feels such symptoms, it is important to seek medical attention.
There are a number of ways in which anemia is treated depending on the level of effects. Severe anemia is treated through blood transfusion, especially after accidents that result to excessive loss of blood. Average anemia can be treated through injections and over the counter drugs for iron supplements. Fortunately, I reached for the medics in time, mine was mild, I was put by my personal doctor on a diet which included taking a lot of meals rich in iron. He gave me a list of plants and animal products that can supply iron (responsible for accelerating blood increase in the body)to my body. Liver and beef are good sources from animals whilst peanuts, beans and molasses are healthy sources from plants. I took them for about four months before my health was fully restored.
Pregnancy made my journey with anemia very unique. Perhaps the reason it took me a lot of time to recover. This is because, the body needed a lot of iron at that time because of the unborn. Pregnancy comes with a lot of challenges and one would have to put a very positive attitude in order to follow the entire requests from the doctors. Appetite loss is one thing that I had to struggle a lot with.
It is important to carry out regular medical check ups to avoid all these preventable diseases that arise from bad eating habits. Some of them are very cheap to avoid but will cost a lot to treat. Do not trade your health with anything else.!
