A Billionaire is lost in the Alaskan wilderness with two men: one envious of his riches and his wife and the other just trying to survive. “The Edge” is suspense in the making when three men try to survive as they are stalked by a hungry Kodiak bear. Will they make it until rescued?
When arriving in Alaska for a photo shoot, Charles played by Anthony Hopkins is lured into flying off with Bob played by Alec Baldwin. Charles is suspicious of the romantic involvement of his wife and Bob. Charles also has a distinct suspicion that Bob has plans to kill him.
During the flight, the plane they are in hits a flock of birds and crashes into the lake. The pilot is killed leaving Bob, Charles and Stephen (Bob’s assistant played by Harold Perrineau) alone to survive alone in the wilderness. They have no survival skills but rely on the knowledge of Charles who has this astonishing memory for facts. Charles is able to guide them and while doing so, he bonds with Bob for the time.
As they are trying to stay alive, they are being stalked by a hungry Kodiak bear. During their attempts to keep one step ahead of the bear and find their way back to the area they feel will be checked, Stephen has an accident with the knife and cuts himself deeply. The blood attracts the bear and Stephen is killed.
Bob and Charles are then left alone. As they try to ward off the bear, Charles decides he is tired of running and is going to kill the bear. They lure him into a trap and Charles impales him on a stake while also saving Bob’s life as the bear is going after him.
Bob and Charles come upon a cabin and there, Bob tries to kill Charles. He takes him outside and before he knows it, falls into a ‘Deadfall’ impaling himself on a stake that is there as a booby trap for bears or other predators.
Even though the movie bridges a bit around morality, it centers more around suspense as viewers tend to remain on edge waiting for the bear to attack. Until Stephen is killed, viewers wait to see who will be first. It does touch a bit on a cheating young wife who marries a man for his money, places his life in danger by cheating on him with a much younger man. Bob definitely wants to be in Charles place. He wants Charles money and his wife. There is no telling what he will do if he accomplishes his goal as he knows what she is about and will never be able to trust her.
One scene is particularly troubling as Mickey, Charles’ wife played by Elle MacPherson, knows Charles is older and being so she knows the trick they will play on him when sending him to prepare a sandwich. But she does so anyway. Charles and everyone else has been warned not to leave food out as there is a problem with bears and food is a definite ‘no no.’ Bob is sent to prepare a sandwich and they all prepare a trick to punce on him in Bear costume. It appears Mickey’s goal is to also rid herself of Charles.
Charles knows exactly what is going on as he feels something already, but then when seeing a kiss between the two, he now is certain there is an affair. Then he discovers proof of the affair.
“The Edge” is more about suspense and stalking from the bear than cheating. Alec Baldwin is sometimes more fake than real in his performance. He seems to not be able to carry off acting performance when trying to set the stage for the role he wants in a model. A few other scenes are more false than real and not carried off very well.
