When the senses are toyed with, no one can imagine how the body will respond in “Senseless.” A new senses enhancing drug is being developed. A college student needing money is the guinea pig. He tries the drug and begins to have strange results. When he discovers his senses enhanced to such a degree he excels at everything he does, he figures a double dose will make his chances even better. He has no idea what he is in for and the results are hilarious.
Marlon Wayans is once again demonstrating his talent. He is simply awesome. He plays the role of Darryl Witherspoon stupendously. With support from roommate Tim LaFlour played by Mathew Lillard, scenes comprising the two are double whammies.
Darryl is a scholarship kid who has to work extra hard to pay for college while trying to maintain a high GPA. His goal is to get his mother, siblings and himself out of the ghetto and into the high rises of Manhattan. He can only do this by graduating from college and getting hired by one of the most prestigious brokerage firms in the country. However, he is up against some strong competition one of whom is an arrogant, stuck up rich kid named Scott Thorpe, played by David Spade.
Scott opposes Darryl on every turn yet, he has to come down off his high horse in the end when Darryl has support from his girl’s father. His girl is Janice played by Tamara Taylor. Her father is Randall Tyson played by Rip Torn. Randall is one of the high ranking executives of the brokerage firm. .
When Darryl discovers the positive effects of the drug, he fails to adhere to the warnings of the chemist and decides to hit himself up with a double dose. All along, he has been impressing everyone as the drug has made him a superstar academically as well as physically in sports. However, when he gives himself a double dose, the results are hilarious.
Spoiler Alert: Writers could have done no better than the scene as Darryl is heading to an interview with the executive team for the brokerage firm, the drug sends his senses into overdrive. He cannot see. He seeks help from the first person he can and is ultimately assisted to the removal of all clothing and money. When seeking help further, he is then outfitted in the most horrendous suit ever. His antics during this scene are hilarious.
With an excellent cast and far too many stars to name, “Senseless” should have grossed far more than it did in the first weekend. However, it did well. Budgeted at $5,337.651 it grossed $13,035,599 the first weekend released.
Rip Torn, David Spade and Mathew Lilard are crowd drawing names. All in all, comedic talent of the group and the seamless effort as it all comes together makes “Senseless” a very good movie; one to be placed on the must see list not only for fans of names mentioned but to broaden the scope of talent.
