Review: I thought the first “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs” was surprisingly good. However, when I heard there was going to be a sequel, I did have some doubts about it and, as a result; it took me a while to take the time to watch it. We finally did watch “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2” this past weekend and, while it wasn’t quite as good as the original, it did, once again, exceed my expectations.
The overall plot, to be perfectly honest, was a bit predictable. The movie made it pretty clear Chester V (Forte) had a dastardly plan and, once that was out in the open, it wasn’t too hard to figure out what was going to happen. In other words, while still entertaining, the movie didn’t offer any surprises and I do think it would have been a little better had they tried to keep some things a secret.
I will admit, however, the food animals were pretty cool to watch and we managed to get some laughs out of some of the one-liners that popped up as a result of the unique creatures (including “there’s a leek in the boat”). I especially enjoyed the scenes with Tim Lockwood (Caan) teaching pickles how to fish. Those creatures, combined with the vivid scenery, did make up for a less-than-memorable script.
Final Opinion: This is definitely not as good as the first film. However, it was worth taking the time to watch and, overall, I do feel it was a pretty decent movie.
My Grade: B
