When Tom is asked to be ‘maid of honor’ for his very best friend, he realizes he has to prevent the wedding in “Made of Honor.” Patrick Dempsey plays Tom in this romantic comedy.
Can male and female friends share a close relationship yet still maintain a friendship not crossing that boundary into love? Tom and Hannah find out in “Made of Honor.” While Tom tries to stay the single, different woman in my bed every night, kind of guy, he does realize, when it appears to be too late, there is only one woman for him.
Spoiler Alert: Tom and Hannah have been happenchance friends. After a random meeting, they become close and begin to share everything including friends and ideas. Their relationship is uncomplicated as they each have their own relationships outside of the friendship. However, when Hanna becomes engaged, Tom suddenly realizes Hannah is the only one for him. He then stops at nothing to prevent the marriage from taking place.
Patrick Dempsey plays the role of Tom: Handsome hunk with everything going for him and desiring no emotional attachments. Hannah is played by Michelle Monaghan. Hannah in realizing her biological clock is ticking like crazy is ready to settle down. She begins to show signs of wanting. When she announces her engagement to a Scotsman, Tom sets in motion his plan to stop the wedding.
Hannah ask Tom to be her Maid of Honor and he accepts. His intent is to prevent the wedding while hers is to honor her friend and get on with her life. Hannah never realizes Tom’s actions are intent on preventing the wedding and demonstrate his love. As each opportunity to let her know his feelings fails, Tom figures another and begins to work on how to let stop the wedding, but time is running out.
Not until a passionate kiss between the two does Hannah realize Tom is in love with her. She continues with the wedding plans and is ready to move forward with the actual wedding when she can no longer pretend and realizes she loves Tom not Colin.
“Made of Honor ” dispels the old adage you can maintain a friendship with the opposite sex without becoming romantically involved. Tom and Hannah prove friendship is only a thin line away from love. Even though they are really trying to be ‘best’ friends, their love takes over in the end.
The movie had a budget of a little of forty million and grossed only a little over forty six million. With very subdued moments of hard laughter, “Made of Honor” is good as a family flick with light entertainment. The best thing about the movie is if you’re a fan of Patrick Dempsey, you get to see him in a more than conspicuous role.
