Some love transcends the line between life and death. “Ghost” is the story of a love so strong that it transcended death. When Sam (Patrick Swayze) is murdered for financial gain, his spirit will not leave his earthly boundary until he secures the safety of Molly.
Sam Wheat is a financial whiz in a bank. He is in love and lives with Molly (Demi Moore). He works with a friend Carl Bruner (Tony Goldwyn). Even though Tony is a friend, he is involved in money laundering so in essence, Carl is a crook. Sam has no idea Carl is laundering bank money. Sam, Molly and Carl are always together except when Sam and Molly decide to visit a theater performance.
While returning from the performance, Sam and Molly discuss their future but all along are being followed. When realizing they are being followed, they turn and confront their stalker. Sam and the stalker fight and Sam is stabbed. Before help arrives, Sam dies.
When Sam determines he is a ghost, he tries to communicate with Molly. After finding out what Carl is about, he tries to then advise Molly of Carl as his murderer. He finds the only person he can communicate with is a fake median, Ola Mae Brown (Whoopi Goldberg). It takes some doing, but Sam finally convinces Ola Mae to visit Molly.
After finally convincing Molly that Sam is still around, Molly is told that Ola Mae is a fraud by detectives. Sam has to then try other means to protect Molly and get the money Carl has laundered away from him.
All along, Carl is trying to get the money to his cohorts. When discovering that Sam is still around, both Molly and Ola Mae lives are in danger as Carl is now on their track and trying to get the money back which is no longer available to anyone.
If you’ve never seen “Ghost” you’ve missed a treat. It was one of the absolute best releases of 1990. Budgeted at $22,000,000, the movie grossed $217,63,306. The soundtrack also made history during that time when “Unchained Melody” performed by The Righteous Brothers made history a second time during 1990 and again in 1991 by hitting the charts on the Hot 100 and reached the #1 spot in the UK as the top selling single in 1990 and in Australia staying #1 for seven weeks from November 1990 through January 1991.
Spoiler Alert: Whoopi Goldbberg and Patrick Swayze are absolutely fantastic in several scenes in Ghost. The first scene when she first realizes she hears his voice. She bolts from the room as she is finally realizing she has the gift. She then is awesome when allowing him to take over her body so Molly and Sam can share one last time dancing. The last scene is when Ola Mae, Sam and Molly finally realize the two can see Sam.
