Renting a motorhome for a family vacation can be the experience of a lifetime. Not only does it allow for relaxing travel, but it is a way to go from one tourist attraction to another, viewing sights along the way.
This form of travel is especially good for families with young children. We all know how cranky kids can be when confined to carseats, or even just buckled in with a seatbelt for long periods of time. Motorhome travel allows for short stops for them to move around, or even have a ready bathroom and kitchen available for use. And, when properly restrained for safety, they can even stretch out in bed for a nap. In fact the whole family can stop at a roadside rest area for an afternoon nap in the motorhome. Family pets can also come along for the ride.
One should not be stopped from checking out this type travel if they have never driven a motorhome before. The first time I drove one was a rental that I got a quick tutorial on before striking out in Alaska with my ten year old son. I did fine with driving it except for feeling secure with backing the thing up. My son still laughs at me because I would have him stand at the back window (which in this one was in the bathroom) to direct me as I backed up.
When renting a motorhome one can expect to have all the necessary items supplied for them except for personal items and food. Most come with at least one television. A typical motorhome sleeps between six and eight comfortably, but don’t expect the beds to be as plush at the one you might have at home.
For lengthy trips one should prepare to stop at a laundry along the way to wash clothes and towels. Some RV parks have washers and dryers, so that chore can be taken care of while camping. And, while the one we rented had a nice bathroom, we did take advantage of the showers at some of the camping areas.
There are a number of options available for the traveler at RV parks. Some are just basic with an electrical hook-up, water, and sewage, while others come with amenities such as internet, cable, and pool. We stayed at one which had outdoor grilling for the renters. Another had bikes available for the renters. Some have nice play areas where kids can run and play.
The best way to find a motorhome for rent is to do it the modern way–do a search on the internet by putting in “motorhomes for rent”. This will bring up businesses that list the states they are located in, type of motorhome available, and cost of the rental by size. When factoring in the price one should also estimate the cost of gasoline to drive the distance you plan to travel. Also, check with your auto insurance company to see if you are covered under your regular insurance policy.
Oh, and just a warning, if you are like me, you will enjoy the experience so much that it won’t be long before you are searching for a motorhome of your own.
