Many people do not realize how much money they waste in their household. We had a home energy audit done for our home a couple years ago. It helps us understand, what areas of our old house need improving. Here are some of the things you should do save you lots of money.
Install a Programmable Thermostat
The biggest thing you can do to save money is to replace your older style thermostat with one that is programmable. If used effectively doing this alone will save you enough money in a month to pay for the thermostat. Just make sure it is on a manageable temperature. Remember, you can always put on a jacket in the winter and wear light clothes in the summer.
Replace Your Air Filters Often
You would be surprised how many people do not change their air filters when they are suppose to. Working at a store that sells these I have come across lots of people who replace their 1 month filter two or three times a year. There are several reasons why you should avoid this. The biggest being added stress to your unit, decreasing the life of your system. It also increases the monthly A/C bill given that it has to work harder and use more energy. The best thing to do is buy the 3-month air filters. It cost about the same as if you would obtain three monthly filters. These filters will trap most allergens like dust and pollen.
Update Your Lighting with CFL’s
The type of light bulbs you use can have a large impact on your bill. Many people tend to buy a cheap incandescent bulb. These bulbs generate plenty of heat, which will make it tough to cool a room down. The best bulb to obtain is the compact fluorescent light (CFL). These produce less heat as well as a longer life span.
Install a Water Saving Toilet
One of the biggest wastes in your household is the water used to flush toilets. When you flush an older toilet, you can waste nearly seven gallons of water. The average toilet only needs about two gallons of water to flush. Upgrade to a water sense toilet for around $100, which will pay for itself in a year. If you do not want to spend the money, a dual flush toilet bowl kit is an option. These kits give you the option to flush a small or large amount of water. This cost less than $20 to buy and is easy to install.
Insulate and Seal Up Your House
We all know that your attic and walls need proper insulation, but many people do not know there are other areas that need insulating. The water heater should have an insulating blanket to keep the heat from escaping. You can buy one for under $25 at any home improvement store. The wall outlets and switches also need an insulating cover. The ones on the outer walls of the house can allow air to escape. If you have older windows, then you probably have air leaks. The mid part of the window is usually the main problem area get a strip of foam to seal up that area. The main objective is to keep the air from escaping the outer walls.
