Iron River, Michigan – The drive west only took an hour, it was nice to get away from home for just a few hours. I kept thinking all the way there how a sons love for his mom could result in him being kicked off the team. I just couldn’t wait to get there, I may have gone over the speed limit getting there. Their house sat pretty far off the road, just 2 tire tracks led the way to their house. Driving anywhere else other than the driveway would result in you being stuck. This is definitely the UP of Michigan where we’ve really gotten clobbered with snow this winter.
In 2013, Mikes mother Wendy Pawlicki asked Mike if he would color his mo-hawk pink in support of cancer awareness and he said he would. Mike said they bought the dye but then he got caught up in other things, the dye always got put on the back burner. Mike told me he dyed his mo-hawk blue during football, the school let him do that. Blue was his school color, but I guess pink is not.
Earlier this week, Mike decided now would be a good time to go pink. The track season was coming up and he wanted to do something special. He had already promised mom he would do this. On Wednesday, March 26th Mike bleached his mo-hawk and kids at school asked what color it would be this time. Even they were used to it, colored hair IS normal in school now-a-days.. Mike told everyone he was doing it for his mother, most seemed to think that was a great cause. Most I say because when Mike showed up to school on Thursday, he was in the office before school even started. The principal wanted him to remove the pink from his hair, even if he had to shave his head. Mike said he was told he would NOT be allowed to attend this track meet if he didn’t take care of it. He was given a choice.
How could Mike give up on his mother? They said he must decide between “Family or the Team”.. Not in those exact words, but to Mike that is exactly what they meant. There was no other choice, he dyed his hair because his love and compassion for his mom.. Of course he would throw his support to her now. I could tell you his entire story, but I think you should hear it yourself from him.
