The theme changes year after year but the message is very clear and consistent as Miami Fashion Week highlights the importance of creativity in the international fashion world. From May 15th through May 18th, 2014, this was surely the largest Miami event to turn heads all the way up the coastline. This marked its 16th year and each year the word seems to spread further and further.
Not only was the runway filled with tastes of tantalizing fashion, but there were also workshops and classes that gave attendees helpful tips in many avenues of the business taught by experts in the field. Founder of Miami Fashion Week, Beth Sobol, presented ‘The Catwalk Chronicles’ relating her experience of going from model to founder of this huge fashion event.
So many fashions that could easily adapt to the Miami fashion scene were brought to the catwalk in appealing colors, styles and fabrics. Designers with an interest in imprinting their style and their brand upon the world and showing off their chic collections, came from diverse nations such as Colombia, Africa, Spain, Peru, Argentina and Italy, amongst others. Fashions and accessories for women and children made the event a family affair to remember. Swimwear and lingerie took us to a sensual world of wildly desirable looks.
The entire event was four days of some of the most fantastic collections that you will ever see. It is difficult to put it all into words, however, it is important to highlight some of the best and brightest. On the very first evening of Miami Fashion Week, designers competed for the chance to outfit the new Eastern Airlines flight attendants. Eastern Airlines also happened to also be one of the corporate sponsors this year. Winning that opportunity to design the new uniforms for the airline was a Miami-based brand with roots in Venezuela. Head of the designer house is Lisu Vega and we will definitely be seeing more from this visionary. She was thrilled to be able to put her creativity into motion.
A powerhouse in the design world, Custo Barcelona, ended Day One with vibrant colors, courageous designs and an energetic runway show which reminded us why we love this designer so much. He can light up a room, no matter how large it may be, with his sizzling dresses and resort wear that fulfill all dreams and wishes.
We went from the ballroom to the beach when the Italy and Argentina Showcase gave us the gorgeous smile of Miss Universe 2013, Gabriela Isler, as she graced the runway in style with plenty of sophistication. She went from exquisite gowns to flirtatious swimwear. All throughout the evening we saw many different outfits compliment her curvaceous figure.
One of the biggest treats of the week was the presence of famous gown and evening wear designer, Sherri Hill, who presented a collection that was absolutely awe-inspiring, as usual. Sherri is well known for designing for some of the hottest celebrities and season after season, both Kendall and Kylie Jenner walk the runway in gowns and dresses from her collection for that particular season. Sherri Hill has given a whole new meaning to glamour. Many a beauty contestant has worn her designs with pride. In attendance at this show was Grammy nominated singer, Leslie Grace, who admired all the fashions. The show was attended by Miss Michigan Teen USA, Iris Robare and Miss Pennsylvania Teen USA, Sydney Robertson, who both watched from the front row. The sparkling jewels of the dazzling dresses hypnotized the audience. Red gowns, pink, emerald green, all prom-like and red-carpet ready dresses had a flair of sparkle that left one gasping in awe.
Perhaps one of the best ways to end an evening and an event as well was with the innovative and intriguing designs of Agatha Ruiz de la Prada. A fun curation of jumpers and cylindrical shaped dresses with hand-painted stars adorning them, stripes and giant polka-dotted bows flashed about the catwalk just as the background screens matched the patterns of the garments. It was even a kaleidoscope of color that gave the collection its real personality. To top off the exciting show, a brief awards ceremony was held where Agatha and one of her models, Fernanda Uesler, were both honored respectively as Designer of the Year and Model of the Year. An award was also extended to designer Claudia Bertolero who won the honor of Young Designer of the Year. Bertolero’s number one passion is design but horses and the equestrian world play a close second. She has gained some of her experience working under Prada.
Miami Fashion Week 2014 came to a climactic end with a final close party that was held at the Surfcomber Hotel on South Beach not far from the Convention Center. Based on the conversations of those that attended, this fashion week was synonymous with success and surpassed all expectations while adding a good number of additional followers for years to come.
