In a 2010 study, the Center for Disease Control determined that 70% of adults over the age of 20 are overweight. That number is startling and terrifying. If you are a man, you should be especially concerned since overweight men have a higher chance of suffering health problems, including heart disease. Losing weight can be difficult as you get older, since there is often less time to exercise and your metabolism has usually slowed down. Luckily there are some foods that actually increase your body’s ability to burn fat. If you are trying to lose weight, try some of the following five best fat burning foods for men.
Chicken – Any lean meat will actually suffice, but chicken is generally inexpensive and easiest to find in lean varieties. Researchers from the University of Copenhagen revealed that a diet where men substituted 20% of their carbohydrates with lean protein resulted in 5% more burned fat. That is excellent news and means you can burn fat extra fat just by spending time in front of the grill.
Jalapeno – As you know if you’ve ever eaten anything hot, spicy foods increase your heart rate and make you sweat. The latter burns a little fat, but the former is the key. The increased heart rate also translates to an increased metabolism. If jalapenos aren’t your favorite, anything with capsaicin will do the trick.
Green Tea – According to 2005 findings, green tea appears to help burn fat. The primary reason for this is an ingredient called catechins which appear to have an affect on body fat and on cholesterol. Additionally green tea has caffeine which increases your heart rate and metabolism, especially in men. If you don’t enjoy tea, both coffee and, surprisingly, Diet Coke, will provide similar but reduced benefits due to the caffeine content.
Walnuts – It isn’t the nut itself that burns fat, but rather the amount of work you have to go through to actually eat the thing. Whether you pull out nut crackers or just like to swing a hammer to crack it open, you are getting exercise every time you eat one. You can get a lesser benefits from peanuts. Alternately, if you have to wrestle enough with it, cracking a crab or lobster out of its shell will burn fat, too.
Beans – Beans do not directly increase your body’s ability to burn fat, but they do reduce your likelihood of building up more fat, making other fat burning foods more effective. This is the result of beans making you feel fuller than similar foods. Men, in particular, tend to overeat and beans are the perfect food for preventing that. Your body is generally resistant to burning fat once it is stored, so anything that prevents you from producing new fat is easily worth as much in fat burning as any of the previous foods.
