Memorial Day is a time when many people have a cookout. They light up the barbecue and make the day special with grilled meat and potatoes. Here are a few ideas for a Memorial Day cookout.
Decorate your dining area with red, white and blue decorations. Put the American Flag up in at least one spot. Place a white tablecloth on your table and have red and blue serving pieces just for an example. Use red, white and blue napkins and have party hats that are the colors of the flag.
Wear red, white and blue clothes for your Memorial Day celebration. All your clothes can be all three colors or wear a white shirt, blue pants and red shoes. Memorial Day comes once a year so celebrate it with the memory of the people who you miss.
Grill some meat and potatoes for your Memorial Day celebrations. Hamburgers and hot dogs are the typical American food served on Memorial Day but you can grill chicken, fish or pork. My husband likes to grill it all.
For potatoes you can serve a simple bag of potato chips or make an aluminum foil packet of slices of potatoes and onions to grill along with your meat. I remember in Girl Scouts we put hamburger meat, sliced potatoes and onions into aluminum foil and grilled that on Memorial Day.
Apple Pie is also an American food and you can have it for desert on Memorial Day. Or you can put apple slices, brown sugar and cinnamon in an aluminum foil packet and grill it for an apple filling desert.
On many Memorial Day celebrations I have seen a red, white and blue cake for desert. These cakes are a wonderful addition to any Memorial Day celebration. Some just have red, white and blue frosting on them and others are decorated with red strawberries and blueberries on white icing.
Before or after dinner take a trip to the cemetery to honor the people who have died especially the veterans. In many cemeteries small American flags are placed on the graves of the veterans so the cemeteries are dressed up for the special day. Many people buy poppies and put them on the graves of veterans. They buy from the local veterans group so support your American vets and buy a poppy for a Memorial Day celebration.
Have a happy and safe Memorial Day celebration no matter how and what you do to celebrate it.
