Memorial Day 2014 falls on Monday, May 26 this year. This is a special day to remember, honor, and celebrate all of those who served in the armed forces. It is also the unofficial start to summer. Whether you’re hitting the beach or participating in one of the many memorials this weekend, make sure to grab the family and head out for one of these events in the South Bay.
Get into the spirit early by joining in the 55th Annual Armed Forces Weekend on May 16-19th. Torrance kicks off the celebration with an afternoon and evening performance of the Navy Band Southwest on Friday and a parade on Saturday. They also will have a military exhibit all weekend long at the Del Amo Fashion Center. Check their website for locations, times, and traffic information.
Veterans Cemetery Memorial Ceremonies
Almost every city in the South Bay and Los Angeles area has some sort of ceremony at their local veteran’s cemetery. Check out different ceremonies in your area by going to your local city’s event website. You can also visit different military memorial sites in the area and pay your respects that way. Long Beach Fine Art Festival- Art and wine combine in this free weekend event at the Marina Green in Long Beach. Meet with artists while you discuss and view their work. Enjoy fine wines and food truck eats. Festival is open at 10am-7pm on Saturday and Sunday and 10am-5pm on Monday.
Fiesta Hermosa is an Arts and Crafts Fair with live music and food located in Downtown Hermosa Beach. There will also be a Charity Beer & Wine Garden where the proceeds will be donated to local charities. Another fun attraction for this fair includes the Kiddie Carnival with fun rides, activities, and a petting zoo for kids ages 3 to 10. This promises to be a fun event for all ages.
Redondo Beach Memorial Ceremony and BBQ- Join the Redondo Beach veterans in this respectful remembrance ceremony honoring our fallen veterans. The ceremony will be located at the new Veterans Memorial in Veterans Park at Redondo Beach. After the service, join the Elk lodge located next to the park for a BBQ that is free for vets and current military members and only a $5.00 donation for the general public.
