Having a barbecue for Memorial Day? Here’s a shopping list of everything that you need for you Memorial Day barbecue.
First and foremost, Memorial Day is a day to remember fallen soldiers. With that in mind you should have a patriotic theme to your Memorial Day barbecue decorations. The great thing about getting decorations is that you don’t need to spend a lot of money to get some great looking decorations. Fortunately, the Dollar Tree has many patriotic decorations in store right now. This includes table centerpieces, serving bowls, utensils, plates, napkins, streamers, balloons, and other decorations. Most of these decorations are adorned with flags which is perfect for Memorial Day. To keep with the patriotic theme, use American flags and the colors of red, white, and blue throughout your barbecue. If you get everything at the Dollar Tree you don’t have to worry about spending too much money since everything is just a dollar there.
2. Tables and chairs.
Depending on the size of your barbecue you may need to get some extra chairs and tables. WalMart has a great selection of folding chairs and tables that are much cheaper than other places. For under $40 you can get a nice 5 foot long folding table that can be used again and again. This means that if you buy folding tables and chairs now you will have them again for any other parties that you may have in the future. This is a great idea for those who entertain a lot but don’t want to buy any permanent tables and chairs. Simply just throw a tablecloth over the table to make it go with your party. For Memorial Day, if you have a couple tables, a great idea is to alternate the colors of each table. Maybe for one table have a blue tablecloth while another tablecloth has red.
3. Food and drinks.
The most important part about a Memorial Day barbecue is the meal. A great and easy barbecue to have is old fashioned hot dogs and hamburgers. There’s nothing more American than that. These are also much easier to make for a large group. If you have a really large group try picking up all your food supplies at Costco or Sam’s Club. These club stores sell bigger packages of food and will usually be better for your pocketbook. Some other great food items for a Memorial Day barbecue are fresh watermelon, potato salad, corn on the cob, jello, cold salads, pasta salads, and baked goods. If you are worried about being overwhelmed with making all the food ask your guests to bring along one of their favorite dishes to share with everybody.
As far as the drinks go be smart about it. If you are having an all ages party make sure all the alcoholic beverages are out of reach to the children. Have water readily available to everyone, since Memorial Day usually is a hot day, to make sure no one gets dehydrated. Having single served beverages, such as soda in cans or juice in bottles, can make things easier. Have a bag or trash can readily available for people to throw their cans and bottles in for recycling.
Since Memorial Day is typically hot and your barbecue will be held outside, incorporate activities that may cool people down. If you have a pool this would be a great time to have a pool party. If you don’t have a pool you can still have some fun with water by having water balloons and squirt guns. Music should be played during the party as well to make for a great atmosphere. Make a mix of party and fun songs while incorporating a couple patriotic songs to keep with the theme of the party. If you’re really up for it karaoke is a great party activity. Other great activities can be sports related since Memorial Day is often the unofficial start of Summer. It’s all about play now that school’s over with so keep the party fun and make sure everyone is having a good time.
