Singer, mother, fashion icon, and Academy Award-winning actress all describe Cher. Her popularity endures as the years pass. Her birth date is May 20, 1946.
Cher was born in El Centro, California, and named Cherilyn Sarkisian. She gained notoriety with then-husband Sonny Bono as an act called simply Sonny and Cher. The couple shook the charts with their 1965 hit I Got You Babe, according to biography.com.
The pair divorced in 1975. Cher began a solo career and topped the charts with hits like Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves and Half Breed. The popularity of her over-the-top costumes paralleled that of her vocal achievements.
Moving into Acting
Cher has worked as an actress both on the stage and in film. In 1982, she performed on Broadway in Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean and also acted in the film production.
The following year, she turned in a memorable performance in Silkwood, followed by Mask in 1985 and Moonstruck two years later. Silkwood earned her an Academy Award nomination, and she took home an Oscar for Best Actress for Moonstruck.
Although Cher’s 2002 album Living Proof contained a single titled (This Is) A Song for the Lonely that received good ratings, many people didn’t realize it was created to remember those affected by the 9-11 terrorist activity the preceding year. Following its release, the singer scheduled a farewell tour, which included 325 live performances from 2002 to 2005.
The event, called Cher: The Farewell Tour, received six 2003 nominations for Emmy Awards and won in three categories, one of which was for costumes for a music or variety program.
By 2006, the entertainer had begun to auction off various art and personal objects from her Malibu home. A portion of the $3.5 million these items netted went to the Cher Charitable Foundation.
In 2008, despite her prior retirement tour, Cher returned to performing live with a show at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. The show ran for 192 performances over nearly three years. Her first album in a dozen years, Closer to the Truth, came out in September 2013, and she announced plans to tour and promote it.
I clearly remember the first time I saw Cher on The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour in 1971. I had put in a long work day at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and turned on the tube for some distraction. After listening to the pair sing and banter, there was no doubt in my mind as to who had the greater talent.
So often people have associated Cher with her glittery costumes, outrageous wigs, thigh-high boots, and other attire. However, I remain convinced that underneath the trappings is an immensely talented women who is also a philanthropist.
Happy birthday, Cher.
