Employees often exhibit withdrawal behavior that is undetected to management due to the fact that management does not know the sigh of employee withdraw. There are two types of withdrawal behavior. The first type of withdrawal behavior and usually the first type of behavior that is expressed is psychological withdrawal. The second type of withdrawal that is much more easily witnessed is physical withdrawal. Lets talk about these two types so that you as a manager can identify these signs and make corrective action.
Psychological withdrawal is the mental withdrawal of the employee from the work environment. The employee might be at work, they might be sitting in their chair, but their mind is somewhere else. Lets talk about some of the types of psychological withdrawal. One sign of mental withdrawal is cybersurfing. Cybersurfing is accessing their Facebook accounts, personal emails and surfing the internet. Cybersurfing is a behavior that is wide speed now with the addition of smartphones in the work place. Another psychological withdrawal behavior is what is called the busy worker. The busy worker is when the employee gives off the impression that they are working but in reality they are not working. This busy worker behavior could be due to the lack of motivation. Socializing or office talk is another psychological withdrawal behavior. This type of behavior is often the most visual of the psychological withdrawal.
Physical withdrawal provide the employee with an escape from the physical work environment. This physical behavior is much more visual to management. As with mental or psychological withdrawal there are a number of ways the employee can exhibit this behavior. The most common form of physical withdrawal is in the form of tardiness. Tardiness is usually one of the first physical withdrawal behaviors that the employee exhibits. Another physical withdrawal is long breaks. Long breaks consist of taking extra time for lunch, taking longer restroom and taking longer coffee breaks. This type of behavior is usually the precursor to the most extreme physical withdrawal behavior Absenteeism. Absenteeism occurs when the employee completely removes their self from the work environment. Absenteeism is a sign of nonwork commitment by the employee.
