A guy in Maine heard about a valuable mineral that can be found in the stomach of a porcupine, and on March 27 there was a dead porcupine off to the side of the road after it was struck by a vehicle. He took notice and sprung into action.
However, he got more than what he bargained for, because he unknowingly performed a c-section on the porcupine! He did that by opening up the porcupine because he wanted to see if he could find the mineral, but he found the porcupine’s baby instead.
After the man noticed that there was a baby porcupine, he cut the umbilical cord. He thought the young porcupine was not alive, until he started to massage it and then it started to move and breathe. He must have been surprised, seeing that the porcupine was struck by a vehicle, therefore he probably assumed that there was no chance of the infant surviving.
Even though the infant’s mother passed away, there is a happy ending to the story. As of now, the man is taking care of it, but it is not clear for how much longer. This is because he plans on finding a licensed wildlife rehabilitator, but for now it appears that the porcupine is in good health and is being well-taken care of.
As for the mineral he was looking for, it is probably safe to say that he didn’t find what he was looking for. However, the mineral deposits can supposedly be found in porcupines’ stomachs, and it is used in Chinese medicine.
