Tired of playing the same board games at every family game night? Make your own. It doesn’t take much to whip up your own creations. You may even decide you like them better than the games you’ve purchased.
New Twist on Old Games
Instead of playing by the usual rules, make up new versions of the classics that you love. You might make your own game cards to replace the ones that came with the game, for example. Or you might think of a different way to decide how to move around the game board. Let your kids come up with their own rules for the game.
Mix and Match
Do you have old board games that are missing some of the pieces? Put all of those old game boards and pieces together in a large tub. When you want to come up with your own game, grab the tub of game parts. Mix and match the pieces and game boards to come up with something new. You might choose the spinner from one game, the game board from another and the game play cards from a third. See what sort of game you can create with the recycled pieces.
Family game night doesn’t have to take place around a table. Why not come up with an active game? Gather balls, jump ropes, cones and other sports gear you have on hand. Come up with challenges to do with the gear that you collect. You might take turns setting up a course and challenge another player to do it while hopping on one foot, for example.
Start From Scratch
If you don’t want to use what you already have on hand, start by making a game from scratch. A large square of cardboard works well as a game board. Design your own layout on the board. Decide how you will move around the board and what type of activities you’ll do during the game. Get the whole family involved in designing and decorating the board.
