Dog biscuits are easy to make and dogs love them. You may not save money making your own homemade dog biscuits but you will know what is in them. You do not even have to make the dog biscuits into dog bone shapes. The dog really does not care what shape the treats are they just like the taste. But if you like you can make them into dog bone shapes you just need a cookie cutter shaped like a dog bone.
Dog biscuits are not a picky recipe since there are many ingredients that can be substituted for or replaced. The basic recipe is:
1 ½ cups flour (white or Wheat)
½ cup fat (bacon, butter, lard)
1 or 2 eggs
½ cup water
Mix the ingredients together and add more flour if it is not thick enough. It needs to be thick as bread dough. Flour a board. Roll the dough on the floured board to a thickness of 1/2 inch and cut into any shape you wish. Even rectangles are good. Polk a few holes into each bar.
Preheat the over to 350 degrees
Place bars on greased cookie sheet and put in the oven for 20 minutes. Turn the oven off and flip the bars. Let the bars sit in the oven until they cool.
The basic recipe can be altered for a more enjoyable snack. I like to add a cup of peanut butter or some ground meat. The ground meat can be anything that is ground up like beef, pork, turkey or chicken.
For another variation you can add more eggs to the dough and enough flour to make the dough thick like bread dough.
Basically you can add any ingredients that your dog likes and is good for them. When the dough is done being mixed it needs to be like bread dough so if it is too watery add flour and if it is too dry add a little water until the dough is the right consistency.
When your dog biscuits are baked and cooled you can store them in an air tight container and store them at room temperature. Unless you put meat in the mix then you may want to store them in the refrigerator.
When I make these dog biscuits my dogs seem to know what I am doing and they are at my feet constantly during the entire operation. I have no idea how they know but they do.
