I suffer from frequently dry lips. It’s so bad that I keep lip balms in my purse, my night stand, and my pants pocket at work so I’m prepared when dryness sets in. Although I avoid lipsticks when my lips are especially parched, I have developed a beauty routine that maintains lip health without sacrificing lip color.
Why it is essential to maintain lip health
Your lips do not contain any natural body oils, so they dry out more quickly than other parts of the body. And that means keeping them hydrated more often. Having dry, cracked lips may influence what you eat so you can avoid pain and irritation. This, in turn, can affect your nutrition. Dry lips are also more prone to cold sore breakouts, something I’m way too familiar with.
The facts on lip balms, lipsticks, and lip glosses
Yes, these are three different products! Lip balms are meant to provide moisture to dry, cracked lips . Many cosmetic companies have taken lip balms to another beauty level and decided to add a tint so you get a bit of color while hydrating your lips. Lipsticks, on the other hand, are designed primarily for coloring your lips. Then you have lip gloss which gives some hydration to your lips while either accenting a lipstick or wearing alone for an iridescent shine.
Choosing my lip products
In order to maintain lip health, I have acquired an aresenal of products that gets the job done without sacrificing lip color:
Clarins Lip Balm Crayon: According to its website, Clarins Lip Balm Crayon is a lip balm, lip gloss, and lipstick. It comes in six shades and costs $20. There are comparable products on the market that cost less, but I chose a brand I am familiar with. The Lip Balm Crayon contains shea butter which keeps my lips hydrated for several hours and the color lasts longer than a tinted lip balm.
L’Occitane Moisturizing Lip Balm: This lip balm is 10% shea butter for that desperately needed hydration to maintain lip health. It’s clear and adds a nice gloss to a lipstick. Cost $12.
Blistex Lip Vibrance: A true beauty bargain! For $3, you get dry lip relief and a tint of color. There’s even a little mirror on the bottom of the container for perfect application. Although the color wears off quickly, it’s great to keep in my pocket at work during a long shift.
Blistex Medicated Lip Ointment: You can’t maintain lip health without it. When dry lips are a health issue and a cold sore seems inevitable, this analgesic is my go to lip medicine. I wear this alone without color to allow for healing. Cost $2-3.
