Red Lobster is famous for its succulent shrimp, fish and crab and cheddar cheese biscuits. I suffer from high blood pressure, so when I eat at Red Lobster it is important to check out the menu for low sodium options. Below are the salt content of some of Red Lobster’s popular items, and menu suggestions for those of us looking to limit our sodium intake to recommended 500 mg per meal.
Soups & Salads
Soups are generally full of salt, and Red Lobster’s soups are no different. A bowl of Red Lobster’s New England Clam Chowder contains the least amount of sodium with 1,390 mg of salt. A bowl of Lobster Bisque contains 1,650 mg of salt. That’s more mg of salt than you should eat the entire day! (See how Olive Garden’s soup and salads compare here)
Thinking about reaching for a Cheddar Bay Biscuit? Remember each biscuit contains 350 mg of salt, over two-thirds the amount of salt allotted for a single meal!
Lobster & Crab
A live Main lobster with stuffing contains 1,120 mg of salt. New England Lobster rolls contain 1,530 mg of salt. One pound of Snow Crab legs contains 1,580 mg of salt. A full portion of the Chef’s signature Lobster and Shrimp pasta contains 2,170 mg of salt. A full portion of the crab linguini Alfredo contains 3,650 mg of heart stopping sodium!
Crunchy popcorn shrimp contain 2,100 mg of salt. Maple-Glazed salmon and shrimp contain 2,690 mg of salt. Walt’s favorite shrimp contains 2,270 mg of salt. A full portion of the shrimp linguini Alfredo contains 3,200 mg of sodium. Pecan-crusted Jumbo Shrimp contains 3,780 mg of salt, over twice as much sodium as a person should contain in one single day. Cocktail sauce 1 oz 480 mg
Red Lobster’s signature combos are a stroke waiting to happen. The ultimate feast contains 3,660 mg of salt, and the Seaside Shrimp Trio contains 3,940 mg of salt. The Admiral’s Feast contains 4,300 and the New England Lobster and Crab Bake contains 6,000 mg of salt. That’s four days’ worth of sodium in one meal!
Low Salt Options
So what options does a person have that is watching their salt intake? Unfortunately, Red Lobster offers very little low sodium options on their menu. A Bay Harbor Salad only contains 35 mg of salt, but salad dressings are high in sodium. One low sodium option is the Blue berry balsamic vinaigrette which only contains 170 mg of salt. Adding shrimp to your salad (for an additional 350 mg of sodium) puts you 50 mg over your target of 500 mg. Unfortunately, adding chicken or salmon is out of the question, as they contain 530 and 1,350 mg of salt, respectively.
You can also choose a half portion of the Wood-Grilled Fresh Tilapia for 400 mg of salt. Adding the roasted vegetable medley for 170 mg of sodium also puts you over your target range of 500 mg, but it is the lowest sodium combinations available.
Unfortunately, eating out at Red Lobster is very difficult for a person watching their salt intake. Choosing low sodium options can at least reduce the amount of salt ingested at one meal, although it will remain hard to stick to your target ranges when eating meals at Red Lobster.
